Call of Duty developer Treyarch has indicated it is ready to move on to new projects after concluding its work on two consecutive Black Ops titles. The studio, which led development on 2024's Black Ops 6 and 2025's Black Ops 7, is preparing to shift focus following the launch of Season 6 for Black Ops 7 on September 17.
"This is a bittersweet goodbye, but I think over the last two years, we've learned a lot," said design director Kevin Drew in a recent developer talk video. "We've tried a lot of things in our current era. But we're ready to make something new and something that nobody's ever experienced before. In the meantime though, I will see you all playing in Season 6 on September 17th."
While the specific nature of Treyarch's next project remains undisclosed, the comments suggest a departure from the Black Ops sub-brand, despite its established popularity. The studio is looking to create an experience distinct from anything players have encountered previously within the Call of Duty franchise. Yale Miller, co-studio head, expressed pride in the team's accomplishments over the past two years, highlighting innovations such as Omnimovement and Endgame features, as well as delivering the largest Black Ops game to date with Black Ops 7. He also extended thanks to partner studios, including Raven, for their contributions to maps, content, and zombie experiences.
Miller also offered a brief mention of Infinity Ward's upcoming Modern Warfare 4, noting that the studio is setting new standards and that players have much more to look forward to. He concluded by expressing his excitement for the future and thanking players for their engagement and feedback throughout the development cycles of the recent Black Ops titles. The future direction of the Call of Duty franchise, under Microsoft and new Xbox boss Asha Sharma, will be a key point of interest as the series aims to recapture its past success.
