The turn-based tactics genre, long dominated by the XCOM series, is experiencing a resurgence with multiple high-profile game announcements. This renewed activity offers a welcome change for fans who have faced a scarcity of similar AAA titles in recent years.

Star Wars Outlaws, formerly known as Star Wars Zero Company, launched this week and aims to blend classic XCOM gameplay with the Star Wars Clone Wars era. The game promises the same tactical depth and strategic decision-making that has defined the genre, evoking the excitement of early XCOM experiences.

Further bolstering the genre, Ubisoft revealed Rainbow Six Tactics during Gamescom Opening Night Live. This title departs from the series' traditional first-person shooter format, offering a single-player, turn-based tactical experience. Drawing inspiration from Rainbow Six Siege, it will feature drone reconnaissance to scout enemy positions before executing coordinated assaults. The game will leverage the destructible environments characteristic of Siege but within a completely new gameplay framework. Rainbow Six Tactics is slated for release on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 5 in 2027.

Intelligent Systems, a developer recognized for its contributions to the genre, is also set to release Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave. While also incorporating RPG elements, the game is expected to satisfy the demand for turn-based strategy. Previews suggest a content-rich experience with four distinct protagonists, each offering unique story paths that could provide dozens of hours of gameplay. This title is anticipated to help bridge the gap until Rainbow Six Tactics becomes available.

The current wave of announcements suggests a brighter future for players who enjoy methodical, turn-based strategy games. The success of these upcoming titles will be crucial in demonstrating continued market interest and potentially encouraging further investment in the genre, including sequels to beloved franchises like XCOM.
