Twitch CEO Expects GTA 6 to Dominate Viewership, Multiplayer Likely Next Year

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy believes Grand Theft Auto 6 is poised to be the biggest video game launch in years and expects it to significantly boost viewership on the streaming platform. Clancy anticipates that the game, set to release in November on PlayStation 5 and Xbox, will capture player and creator attention well into January.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Clancy indicated that Twitch has been in communication with Rockstar Games regarding the launch of GTA 6 and strategies for creator engagement. "We spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans, and also helping them think about how they can engage our creators," Clancy stated. He further suggested that while GTA 6's initial launch will cause a substantial viewership spike, an even larger surge is expected with the eventual release of its multiplayer mode, which he anticipates will arrive sometime next year. Rockstar Games has not officially confirmed a release window for the multiplayer component, stating that GTA 6 will launch as a single-player-only experience on November 19.

Details about GTA 6's multiplayer have been scarce, though past court documents related to Rockstar's employee terminations suggested a potential player count of 32. Rockstar stated these employees were dismissed for revealing sensitive game information, including multiplayer details. Regardless of the precise timing of the multiplayer release, Clancy is confident that GTA 6 will significantly impact overall Twitch viewership. "It absolutely will spike the overall viewership meaningfully," Clancy said, though he acknowledged uncertainty about the exact scale of the increase.
