Ubisoft has reportedly canceled its unannounced Far Cry extraction shooter, codenamed Maverick, and is shifting focus to a new open-world first-person shooter within the franchise. The new project, codenamed Kodiak, is being developed by Vantage Studios, the team responsible for other Ubisoft titles such as Assassin's Creed and Rainbow Six.

According to a report from Insider Gaming, Maverick has been shelved, with some of its concepts potentially being repurposed for Kodiak. This new open-world shooter has reportedly passed its conception stage and entered development. While details remain scarce, the game is said to be years away from launch. The shift back to an open-world format aligns with the core gameplay loop that has defined the Far Cry series for over two decades.

The most recent installment, Far Cry 6, was released in 2021 and received a mixed reception from critics. Following its release, longtime Far Cry producer Dan Hay departed the company. Ubisoft has not officially announced any new Far Cry titles since.

In addition to the game development news, a Far Cry television series from producer Noah Hawley is slated to premiere on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney Plus internationally. The series will adopt an anthology format, with each season featuring different settings and characters, mirroring the structure of the games. The cast includes Rob Mac, Steve Buscemi, and Lizzy Caplan.
