Ubisoft has officially acknowledged recent leaks surrounding the Ghost Recon franchise, stating that more information will be shared on August 6th. This date marks the 25th anniversary of the tactical shooter series.
The Ghost Recon official X account posted for the first time in five months to address the situation, saying, "We know some of you saw some updates. We'll have more to say on the 6th of August when we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Ghost Recon. Intel coming soon."
Prior to this announcement, reports surfaced suggesting that a definitive edition of 2017's Ghost Recon Wildlands is planned for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, with leaks indicating the inclusion of a new mission. The franchise's most recent entry was 2019's Ghost Recon Breakpoint, which received numerous post-release updates. An earlier planned free-to-play battle-royale title, Ghost Recon Frontline, was canceled in 2022 following significant criticism.
Since the cancellation of Frontline, official details regarding new Ghost Recon projects have been scarce. However, persistent leaks and rumors point towards a new title codenamed Project OVR. These reports suggest a shift away from the open-world looter-shooter elements of Wildlands and Breakpoint, aiming to return to the series' origins as a more grounded tactical shooter with a first-person perspective. This potential new direction comes as Ubisoft has undergone significant restructuring, including studio closures and project cancellations.
Fans await official confirmation regarding the Ghost Recon Wildlands definitive edition and the full reveal of Project OVR.
