Valve opted to "leak" the cinematic trailer for Left 4 Dead 2 after the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) would not approve its release, according to former Valve writer Chet Faliszek.
The decision stemmed from ongoing disputes Valve had with rating boards in various countries, including Australia and Germany, over the game's profanity and violence. Faliszek explained that a company lawyer advised writers to moderate language, specifically to avoid "F-bombs," to navigate these rating challenges.
However, the ESRB's restrictions extended beyond the game itself to its marketing materials. Faliszek recounted how this led to Valve leaking the trailer themselves, an act he believes is unlikely to cause repercussions due to the passage of time. "I don't think we can get in trouble for that now, it was like 20 years ago," he remarked.
This anecdote sheds light on Valve's past approaches to marketing and content moderation, particularly during the development and release period of the early Left 4 Dead titles, where the company frequently pushed boundaries with its content and promotional efforts.
