Games Workshop has announced that the animated series Astartes 2 will be released in December. This marks the long-awaited debut of the sequel to the original Astartes, which is widely regarded as one of the best Warhammer 40,000 animations ever created.
Fans had been anticipating news on Astartes 2 for several years, with some speculating about potential cancellation. Games Workshop previously released a teaser trailer in January of last year, suggesting a 2026 release window. The new December release aims to bring the series out before the end of 2024.
The original Astartes was a passion project by fan Syama Pedersen, who was later brought on by Games Workshop to create the official sequel. Last year's teaser trailer showcased a broad scope of action, including melee combat, shooting, vehicle engagements, and even spaceship battles across diverse environments and featuring multiple enemy factions like Tyranids, Orks, and Tau. However, Games Workshop clarified that the teaser did not contain actual footage from Astartes 2. Instead, it was a compilation of shots representing the "former lives of the characters that will appear in the show," with a subtle hint at the story's conclusion.
Astartes 2 will be accessible through Games Workshop's dedicated streaming service, Warhammer TV.
The new series is expected to feature the Inquisition-led Deathwatch Terminator squad, including chapters such as Retributors, Mortifactors, Scythes of The Emperor, Sons of Medusa, and Angels Vermilion, as seen in early promotional materials.
