Marvel Studios' foray into live-action streaming series may be scaling back, with the sudden cancellation of Wonder Man serving as a significant indicator. The series, created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, starred Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, an actor who also possesses superpowers, and featured Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Trevor Slattery. After a positive reception from critics and fans following its January 2026 release on Disney Plus, the show was renewed in March, only to be canceled in July.

Joe Pantoliano, who played an exaggerated version of himself on the show, shared his surprise at the cancellation in a recent interview. "Talk about heart, I thought that show was wonderful," Pantoliano told Polygon. "And then, you know, Destin and his Spider-Man movie is like the hit of the year, then it falls apart. I think there's something going on there that nobody ever — more shall be revealed, but a lot of people were disappointed."

Abdul-Mateen II also commented on the cancellation, telling Vanity Fair that Disney cited viewership numbers as the reason but did not provide specific data. "I was told that it had something to do with the viewership," he stated. "I wasn’t told what those numbers were, but ultimately, I think they decided that it didn’t make sense for business."

In a separate conversation with NPR, Abdul-Mateen was more critical, suggesting a pattern of Marvel failing its Black stars. "When you look at the history of those projects and when you put them all together, there's no way around it," he said. "It does not look good. It does not look like good business. And it looks like it's certainly not favorable to its Black creatives."

It remains unclear why the series was renewed and then canceled. Speculation includes potential shifts in Marvel's streaming strategy or whether the character might be integrated into future films. Pantoliano's remark about more information being revealed leaves open the possibility of further details emerging about the cancellation. Wonder Man is currently streaming on Disney Plus.
