Wonder Man showrunner Andrew Guest has confirmed that contracts were signed and production schedules cleared for a planned second season of the Marvel Cinematic Universe series before its abrupt cancellation. The news of the reversal came on July 30, following an announcement in March that the show would indeed return.
Guest addressed the situation via TikTok, clarifying that the cancellation was not a marketing stunt, nor was there a movie in development connected to the series. He emphasized that director Destin Daniel Cretton's schedule, or anyone else's, was not a factor in the decision. "Contracts were signed, schedules were cleared," Guest stated. "The writers' room was supposed to start this month. The production was supposed to begin early next year." He explained that a decision was made internally between Disney and Marvel, deeming the show no longer a priority despite having been approved for a second season just months prior.
According to Guest, the first episode of the second season had been completed and an outline for the remaining episodes was drafted. He added that the crew felt "really good about" the direction the canceled season was heading. Actor Arian Moayed, who reprised his role as Agent Cleary, shared on Instagram that the cast and crew learned of the cancellation last week and were "pretty gutted," praising Guest's writing and the show's overall quality.
Star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II also shared his thoughts with fans via Instagram. The series, which premiered earlier this year, received positive reception, with a 91% critic score and an 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. IGN awarded Season 1 an 8/10, describing it as a "smaller, low-stakes MCU adventure that thrives on the strength of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley’s performances."
