Solo developer Dogus Cagrici has released Wordless Forest on Steam, a unique full-motion video (FMV) survival game that draws directly from the developer's personal experience. Cagrici spent 40 days hiking through the wilderness of four different Turkish cities to capture the footage for the game.
Wordless Forest is a dialogue-free experience where players guide a character who finds himself lost in the wild with a head injury, attempting to piece together fragmented memories and find his way to safety. The gameplay revolves around making critical, on-screen choices presented as either/or options. These decisions dictate the survivor's path and outcome, such as deciding whether to risk eating potentially unsafe food found at an abandoned campsite or investigating a dark cave that could offer shelter or harbor danger. A key dilemma involves the survivor's missing dog, forcing players to choose between pursuing its tracks deeper into the wilderness or prioritizing their own escape.
While early Steam reviews are mixed, with some players finding the interactivity lean and the experience more akin to a short interactive film, the game has been noted for its compelling narrative and ambitious production. The 45-minute runtime and limited branching paths might not satisfy those seeking deep gameplay mechanics. However, the game's visual presentation is a highlight, especially considering Cagrici handled nearly all aspects of development himself, including performing challenging physical feats like climbing cliffs and eating raw fish.
The game's reliance on minimal dialogue is a deliberate stylistic choice, aiming for a "show, don't tell" approach to storytelling. This minimalist narrative strategy is reminiscent of films like "All Is Lost" and moments in "Cast Away," where visual storytelling and environmental cues convey the emotional weight of survival.
Wordless Forest is currently available on Steam with a 10% launch discount for the next two weeks.
