A free expansion for Worms: The Director's Cut, an unofficial but Team 17-approved pack for the original strategy game's Amiga sequel, has been released to celebrate the series' 30th anniversary. Creator Andy Davidson developed the expansion, aiming to give the game "a new lease on life."
The expansion, titled Worms: The Director's Cut 1.5, introduces over 40 custom levels, 50 new voice sample packs for the worms, and new teams and terrain types. The project is a collaboration with fan creators and features contributions from notable indie developer Jeff Minter, including a Llamasoft-themed level.
Davidson stated that the expansion serves as a chance to "celebrate the Amiga" and hopes it will allow a wider audience to experience The Director's Cut, which he considers his most personally fulfilling take on the Worms franchise due to its gameplay and humor. He also indicated that work is underway on a platform for players to share custom levels.
While The Director's Cut never received a modern platform release, Davidson confirmed via X that the expansion is compatible with emulators for those without original Amiga hardware. He acknowledged the challenges of revisiting the game's original code after three decades, noting that recalling and understanding the intricacies of the decades-old codebase proved more difficult than anticipated.
