Twenty years after the release of World of Warcraft's Ahn'Qiraj expansion, former game director Wyatt Cheng revealed that players' ingenuity often outpaced developer intentions, particularly with the Prophet Skeram boss encounter. Cheng, now known for his educational TikTok content, shared anecdotes about a specific boss mechanic that players consistently found unintended ways to overcome.
The Prophet Skeram boss was designed to split into illusions at various health thresholds, and Cheng's intention was for the real Skeram to be distinguishable by having double the health of the illusions. The idea was that players would need to focus DPS on the illusions to prevent overwhelming numbers of enemies. "I pictured raids spreading their DPS and calling it out on [Ventrilo]: Which two are going down quicker?" Cheng explained, envisioning a scenario where failing to manage the illusions would lead to a wipe.
However, the reality proved different. Cheng recalled that "there were so many easy ways to spot the real Skeram." Initial attempts to differentiate the real boss included naming the copies "Pet of Skeram," but this was quickly circumvented. During testing, developers discovered further exploits, such as UI mods reading creature IDs or mismatched localization strings that revealed the true Skeram.
Cheng described an ongoing "arms race" where he attempted to provide subtle cues to identify the real Skeram. However, looking back at online guides now, he noted that players discovered even more direct methods. One such exploit involved sending a hunter pet after Skeram before the split, which would cause the pet to remain locked onto the real boss. Another method identified was using mana burn, as the illusions spawned with full mana while the original Skeram did not.
Despite these instances where players circumvented his intended mechanics, Cheng expressed a level of admiration. "If it's a real bug or an exploit, sure, we'll fix it," he stated, "But players outsmarting the designer? That's just one for the history books."
