Emma Frost, a character known for her moral ambiguity and complex motivations, is taking center stage in the second season of X-Men '97. Zehra Fazal, who voices Frost in the upcoming season, shared insights into the character's evolution and her perspective on a controversial storyline from the comics.
"The main thing about Emma Frost is she is always self-assured," Fazal explained. "She is always in it for her own reasons — for ill or for good — but what's really wonderful about Emma is that beneath her perfect diamond exterior is a true warm heart, especially when it comes to the younger X-Men. All in all, she's so self-assured and confident that any move she's making is the right one."
In X-Men '97 season one, Frost played a significant supporting role, surviving the mutant genocide in Genosha and later betraying Cable's X-Force team in season two, episode two. This portrayal continues to highlight her complex and sometimes unreliable nature.
However, the most significant development in Frost's history, which has yet to be depicted on screen, is her telepathic affair with Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops. This relationship began in the early 2000s comics when Scott sought counseling from Emma regarding marital issues with Jean Grey. Following Jean's death in the comics in 2004, Emma and Scott became a couple, remaining together until 2016. This period occurred after the original X-Men: The Animated Series concluded its run.
When asked about the possibility of this storyline appearing in X-Men '97, Fazal expressed enthusiasm. "I think Emma and Scott look great together," she stated. "I'll ship that."
While Fazal could not reveal specific plot details for Frost's future in the series, she hinted that fans have much to look forward to. "Fans are in for a really fun ride in season two, and as we go forward into season three, I'm excited for folks to see what might develop for the X-Men in general, but also for Emma Frost. There's a lot of stuff to look forward to."
X-Men '97 is currently streaming on Disney Plus.
