Chris Potter, the original voice actor for Gambit in the 1990s X-Men: The Animated Series, has stated he was never informed of the reasons behind his character's recasting for the recent Disney+ revival, X-Men '97. Potter now voices Cable in the new series, while A.J. LoCascio took over the role of Gambit.

Potter expressed surprise at the lack of communication regarding the change. "I have no idea," he told Polygon when asked about the recasting. He noted that while the original series was a "side hustle" for many actors involved, the current production comes with a greater awareness of the lasting impact the show has had on its audience.

Reflecting on his experience, Potter emphasized his deep connection to Gambit, having voiced the character for 75 episodes and playing a role in defining the character. "In my mind, I'll always be Gambit," he stated, contrasting it with his current role as Cable, which involves stepping into a performance established by others. Potter added that he had the opportunity to help create the Gambit character and felt a unique excitement in that process as a younger actor.

Despite the circumstances, Potter conveyed his happiness at being involved in X-Men '97. He also mused on the nature of the animation industry, stating, "I've never gotten an answer... Not from a single person. I really don't know. I don't think I aged out. I mean, heck, everybody's older than me from the original cast except Jubilee. I don't know. It's a crazy business. I'm just happy to be a part of the new one."

X-Men '97 season two is currently available on Disney Plus.
