Despite recent workforce reductions, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has articulated a bold objective for the company: to entertain over one billion people on a daily basis. This goal was shared in a blog post detailing a broader "restructuring" within Xbox, which has already seen 1,600 employees laid off in the first wave of workforce cuts.
Sharma expressed confidence in achieving this ambitious target, citing Xbox's portfolio of beloved game franchises, its global studio network, and an expected return to growth in 2027. Reaching a billion daily users represents a significant portion of the global population, raising questions about the feasibility of such a goal, especially in light of reduced studio and personnel numbers. Furthermore, a substantial segment of the world's population does not currently have access to Xbox services.
The interpretation of Sharma's statement hinges on the phrasing "entertain more than a billion people each day" rather than specifically "Xbox players." This distinction suggests that mobile gaming will be crucial to realizing this objective. As part of the restructuring, King, the developer of Candy Crush, will report directly to Sharma, as will Mojang, the studio behind Minecraft. While precise figures are not readily available, both franchises have historically maintained large daily active user bases.
In 2021, Minecraft reported 140 million monthly active users, a number likely sustained by factors such as the upcoming Minecraft movie. Candy Crush, which has seen billions of downloads, reportedly has around 26 million daily players, according to Sensor Tower data. Even combined, these two titles fall significantly short of the one billion daily user target.
While other Xbox games contribute to the player count, their collective impact on reaching such a lofty daily active user number is expected to be marginal. The inclusion of third-party titles like Fortnite, alongside Microsoft's own games such as World of Warcraft and Sea of Thieves, does increase the overall player tally. However, these games are generally past their peak performance periods, which once attracted millions of monthly active users.
To provide perspective, Steam, the largest PC gaming platform, recorded a peak of 42.6 million concurrent users. Xbox's daily entertainment goal would necessitate surpassing Steam's all-time high by a factor of approximately 23.
Microsoft's gaming ecosystem, encompassing PC, console, mobile, and cloud services, reported 500 million monthly active users in 2025. The strategy for doubling this figure and achieving it on a daily basis remains unclear, as does the precise definition of what "entertaining" one billion people entails. Sharma's vision, while forward-looking, appears to be a significant challenge given the current landscape and the company's recent organizational changes.
