Helen Chiang, a 21-year veteran of Microsoft and former Chief Operating Officer of Xbox, has broken her silence regarding her abrupt departure from the company. In a LinkedIn post, Chiang addressed speculation, including reports from Eurogamer alleging she was fired for a policy violation. She stated these claims are inaccurate and that she has "serious concerns" about the inconsistent application of company standards in her case.
Chiang, who spent over a decade overseeing the Minecraft franchise before her promotion to COO, explicitly denied leaking confidential information, communicating outside of authorized channels, leaving for a competitor, or engaging in any form of misconduct such as discrimination, bullying, harassment, insider trading, embezzlement, or fraudulent activity. She asserted that her past performance speaks for itself and her departure was not due to being passed over for a larger role, as the COO position was not something she had lobbied for.
"Silence should not be mistaken for agreement," Chiang wrote, emphasizing her desire to correct the narrative surrounding her exit. She expressed that the speculation and what has been left unsaid have created an inaccurate public image of her. Chiang hopes her story highlights the importance of staying true to core values, especially during difficult times.
A Microsoft spokesperson previously told Kotaku, "We don’t discuss individual personnel matters. We’re grateful for Helen’s years of service and wish her well."
Chiang's departure comes during a significant reorganization within Xbox, marked by layoffs and studio divestitures. As COO, she was slated to play a key role in restructuring and optimizing the gaming division for the next console generation, reportedly codenamed Project Helix and expected around 2028. Despite her efforts to clarify the situation, the exact circumstances of her exit remain undisclosed.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma had previously described the company's restructuring efforts as making "tough choices" to set the stage for an ambitious future, stating, "Clarity is kindness." Chiang echoed this sentiment in her post, noting, "This is not how I ever imagined my story here would end. And it is not the whole story."
