Xbox is marking its 25th anniversary, a milestone that has been a significant theme in recent showcases. Despite a period of substantial investment in studio acquisitions, including Bethesda and Activision Blizzard, the Xbox Series X/S consoles have struggled to capture a significant market share. Xbox's chief content officer, Matt Booty, recently spoke about the lessons learned over the past few years and the strategy moving forward.
Booty acknowledged the brand's historical successes and its current challenges, noting that decisions like removing exclusivity from many first-party games have been re-evaluated. A renewed focus on exclusivity for certain titles, such as Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution, is intended to give players a reason to be excited about and invest in the Xbox platform. These games are slated for 2026 and 2027, respectively. Booty emphasized that this shift comes as part of a broader strategic review under new leadership, with an aim to focus on the future. He also affirmed that commitments made to release games on other platforms will be honored.
"We want there to be a reason to believe and a reason to buy Xbox, and for there to be a reward for our loyal fans, but the third one that brings together what you just talked about is clarity," Booty stated. He elaborated that when Xbox announces a release date for a game, it will also specify the platform, aiming for greater transparency. This clarity is crucial as Xbox seeks to re-establish its position in the market.
Regarding the extensive studio acquisitions made in recent years, Booty views the current situation as stewards of over 20 IPs that have achieved significant financial success. His focus remains on supporting the development teams and removing any obstacles to their creation of great games. He highlighted the strong leadership across various studios, from Minecraft to Call of Duty, and believes the existing IP, characters, and stories are essential for the brand's future.
While Booty declined to go into specifics about issues with internal studios like The Initiative, he stressed the responsibility of running a business and evaluating projects. Looking ahead, his immediate focus is on the existing lineup of games. The current year has seen releases and announcements including Blizzard titles, Forza Horizon 6, Halo: Campaign Evolved, Minecraft Dungeons II, Gears of War: E-Day, and Modern Warfare 4. Upcoming titles for 2027 include Fable. Booty noted the fortunate timing of these major franchise releases coinciding with the 25th anniversary, referencing it as a potential 'Mount Rushmore' moment for Xbox gaming.
In addressing the console's popularity, Booty pointed to new leadership's vision, emphasizing the importance of great games and celebrating players. He reiterated that bringing back Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution as exclusives is part of this strategy.
Booty also commented on the Xbox Series S, acknowledging the challenges it presents for developers while affirming Microsoft's commitment. He stated that first-party studios are dedicated to shipping great versions of games on both Series X and Series S, as well as PC, and are working to ensure titles can perform well across a range of hardware configurations. This commitment, he hopes, will encourage other developers to do the same.
The strategy for Game Pass remains centered on providing multiple ways to play, whether through direct purchase, subscription, or cloud streaming. Booty also clarified that "console exclusives" refers specifically to the Xbox console, and these titles will still be available on PC and via Xbox Cloud streaming on other devices.
