YouTube's automated content moderation systems have mistakenly penalized the popular science channel Kurzgesagt, flagging its human-created videos as AI-generated "slop." The channel, known for its accessible and engaging explanations of scientific topics through distinctive animation, reported experiencing significant viewership drops and video removals due to these erroneous AI detections.

Kurzgesagt, whose name translates to "in short," has built a substantial audience since its inception in 2013 by demystifying subjects ranging from astronomy to biology. The channel noted unusual fluctuations in its view counts across recent uploads, initially attributing them to algorithmic quirks. However, a video focusing on microscopic superpredators suffered exceptionally poor performance, prompting an investigation.

Upon reaching out to YouTube, Kurzgesagt representatives were informed that the video had been penalized by the platform's AI detection tools, which falsely identified it as AI-generated material. "YouTube's automatic AI detection tools wrongly think that our very much human-made videos are AI Slop," the channel stated on social media. "It started to choke our channel." Fortunately, contacts at YouTube reportedly assisted in resolving the issue, and the bug is believed to be fixed for now.

The incident highlights the challenges platforms face in distinguishing between genuine human content and AI-generated material, a topic Kurzgesagt itself explored in a video last year concerning the potential for AI to degrade the internet's utility. The channel plans to re-upload the penalized video after making some adjustments to improve quality and prevent future misidentification.

This event is not isolated, as other YouTube channels have also come forward with claims of being suppressed by similar new detection measures. The situation underscores a broader dilemma for companies like Google, which are investing heavily in AI development while simultaneously attempting to curb the proliferation of AI-generated content that could overwhelm or pollute their platforms.
