A significant number of popular ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) YouTube channels were unexpectedly terminated this week, with creators receiving no prior warning or standard strikes. Among the affected accounts are those belonging to creators like Slight Sounds, RoseASMR, and Its_Bunnii. YouTube informed these channels that their content violated "sexual content" policies, a justification that has met with considerable skepticism from the affected creators and the wider ASMR community.
These terminations have had a profound impact on the livelihoods of the creators, many of whom relied on YouTube as their primary source of income for years. "This has been my livelihood and my career for eight or nine years now, so getting it removed and taken away from me without warning obviously affects me financially," Slight Sounds stated to 404 Media. "Being told not only that you’re not going to make money on this, but also your archive, your life’s work, videos that mean so much to me and so many other people are just gone, and I can’t access that."
ASMR is a phenomenon characterized by a tingling sensation triggered by specific auditory stimuli, such as whispering, tapping, or scratching. While the scientific understanding of ASMR is still developing, its popularity surged following its mention on the podcast This American Life, which contributed to the growth of a substantial YouTube community dedicated to providing these soundscapes.
ASMR content often involves creators speaking in soft tones or utilizing various audio triggers. Many popular channels feature role-playing scenarios, ranging from mundane tasks to elaborate fictional settings. While the ASMR community often navigates a fine line between intimacy and overt eroticism, the sudden and widespread nature of these terminations has raised questions about YouTube's enforcement of its policies. Creators have pointed out that many of the removed channels featured content that was relatively mild compared to other material that remains on the platform.
Its_Bunnii shared details of some of their most popular videos, including "Eyes Closed ASMR" with approximately 2 million views, "Gentle Haircut and Styling," and "very breathy and slow ear to ear whispers | story book reading." The creator questioned what aspects of these videos could be interpreted as sexually explicit enough to warrant removal.
The mass terminations have left the performers distressed and confused, particularly as YouTube has indicated no intention of reversing its decisions. Critics argue that this action is part of a broader trend of online content moderation that disproportionately affects queer and erotic content, while major commercial entertainment remains largely unaffected. This situation highlights ongoing tensions regarding content policies and their enforcement on large digital platforms.
