Survival crafting game Zeverland is set to offer a distinct take on the post-apocalyptic genre, blending deceptively cute aesthetics with deep customization options for both items and vehicles. The game, which is planning a Steam Early Access launch in Q1 next year, has recently shifted its design focus based on player feedback from its playtests.

Lead game designer Cecilia Pan explained that Zeverland places a significant emphasis on player cooperation. "When a natural disaster strikes, humanity ultimately always chooses to stand together and fight against it," Pan stated. Unlike many co-op games with fixed objectives, Zeverland aims for a sandbox-style cooperation where players can organically choose to help one another, whether by sharing resources like fuel or collaborating on larger-scale projects such as building bridges or restoring power to city districts.

Players will find over 6,000 interactive objects within the game world, each with unique material properties that influence interactions. Wood can burn, metal can conduct electricity, and weather conditions like rain can propagate electrical hazards. The size and weight of objects also dictate whether they can be carried or must be moved through other means, such as being thrown to deal damage. This system is designed to encourage player creativity in problem-solving.

Weapon customization allows for unique combinations, such as attaching everyday items like a clothes iron to a tennis racket for a fiery melee attack, or affixing a rubber duck to a weapon for a humorous sound effect upon impact. Even a zombie's severed head can be attached to a weapon to potentially grant a stun effect. Similarly, vehicles are highly customizable. Beyond functional upgrades like ramming spikes or beds for mobile resting spots, players can decorate their vehicles extensively, turning them into mobile bases. Pan confirmed that cosmetic additions like a zombie head hood ornament are also possible.

The game also features a unique zombie infection system. Instead of a simple death, players who become infected will temporarily transform into a zombie, retaining some combat abilities. They have a limited time to find a way to revert to human form; failure to do so results in permanent loss of control, with the zombie retaining the character's name. Players can choose to use this limited zombie phase to assist friends. While the current focus for Early Access is on the human experience with four distinct zombie types, the developers plan to expand the zombie mechanics post-launch.

Following its second playtest, Zeverland transitioned from an open-world MMO concept with player sabotage to a PvE co-op focus, with solo play still an option. Future plans include the introduction of private servers for dedicated co-op worlds, alongside continued support for public servers which will feature a larger map. The developers also intend to release themed seasonal servers to foster ongoing player-driven stories.

Zeverland is available to wishlist on Steam, with further information accessible through the game's social media channels.
