Castlevania: Belmont's Curse offers a rewarding experience through its puzzles, hidden rooms, and platforming challenges. While the game is designed to be navigable without external guides, certain in-game mechanics and settings can significantly enhance player enjoyment and ease the journey.
Leverage Gameplay Settings
Developer Evil Empire has integrated robust gameplay settings that allow players of all skill levels to customize their experience. Beyond simply disabling death, these options enable adjustments to damage output and intake, the rate of experience gain for protagonist Rose, and respawn points. Players can opt to respawn outside of boss arenas to mitigate the frustration of repeated traversal, or modify damage taken from environmental hazards like spike pits. Tweaking the number of available healing potions can also provide a less ego-bruising solution to difficult encounters.
Utilize the In-Game Map Effectively
The map in Belmont's Curse communicates far more than just the player's current location. Room background colors, for instance, indicate whether all secrets within an area have been discovered; brown signifies completion, while purple denotes remaining hidden elements. In distinct locations such as Dracula's Castle and Notre Dame, the map renders important rooms with specific detail and can offer subtle puzzle hints. It may, for example, reveal the number of chains that need to be broken for a particular quest and suggest their general direction. The inclusion of 50 map markers allows players to strategically backtrack or note points of interest for later investigation.
Master Works of Mercy and Spells
Rose's offensive and defensive capabilities are greatly expanded by her tarot cards, which are unlocked upon defeating bosses. Each boss grants a new spell, and completing associated side-quests, known as Works of Mercy, empowers these spells. Fully upgraded spells, especially when combined with a high character level, can render boss fights considerably more manageable. The spell obtained from the Brittle King, for example, can make Rose nearly invincible while adding supplemental damage. Many Works of Mercy are straightforward objectives, such as defeating a specific number of a common enemy type, which players will often achieve naturally through progression.
Discover the True Purpose of Mirrors
Beyond their function as save points, the mirrors in Belmont's Curse serve an additional, less obvious purpose: fast travel. After unlocking Dracula's Castle, players can activate this feature by kneeling before a mirror. This action transports Rose to a hidden area containing access to nearly all previously unlocked mirrors within a given zone. While fast travel is initially limited to inter-zone travel via the Ferryman, solving the puzzle within the mirror world expands its functionality. This mechanic is crucial for efficient navigation and exploration.
Prioritize the Notre Dame Boss Fight
In the Notre Dame area, which becomes accessible after Dracula's Castle, the path to the final boss is initially obstructed by three laser barriers. While these lasers increase the difficulty of exploration and secret-finding, the recommended strategy is to focus on defeating the boss as quickly as possible. Once the boss is vanquished, the lasers deactivate throughout the entire Notre Dame area, making subsequent exploration and the completion of any missed challenges significantly easier.
