Optimizing character builds in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 can feel daunting, with a vast array of skills, Pictos, and character synergies to consider. While the main story and most optional bosses can be tackled without min-maxing on normal difficulty, Expert mode presents a significant challenge where enemy encounters can be fatal in a single blow. This guide provides two distinct builds for each playable character, focusing on offensive, defensive, and hybrid roles, along with recommended Pictos and their locations.
Lune Builds
Lune excels as either a potent attacker or a valuable supporter. Her support role allows for substantial free aim and skill damage despite a demanding skillset, while an offensive build requires careful AP management to avoid deficits. The key to an effective offensive build is integrating low-cost skills to maintain AP while executing powerful attacks.
Lune Support Build
This build centers on the mid-game healing skill Typhoon, which provides substantial party-wide healing at the start of a turn. When paired with two Earth Stains, Typhoon activates at the beginning of every turn for three to five turns, offering consistent healing and ice damage. The Terraquake skill is included to generate the initial Earth Stains, with the Benesim weapon at level 10 and higher automatically generating an Earth Stain at the start of each turn, ensuring ample Stains for repeated Typhoon casts. The weapon's starting perk also reduces healing skill costs by one AP.
Supporting Pictos such as Energy Master, Powerful Heal, Protecting Heal, Energizing Heal, and Powerful on Shell enhance Lune's utility by boosting AP gains, applying beneficial buffs to allies upon healing, and granting the caster Powerful. Painted Power is essential for exceeding the 9,999 damage cap, and Second Chance offers a crucial one-time battle revive.
With these buffs, Lune has ample AP and turns to focus on damage. Wildfire can ignite enemies, followed by Thermal Transfer for damage and AP gain. If Thermal Transfer consumes two Earth Stains, it grants Lune an additional turn, though these extra turns count towards Typhoon's duration. Stormcaller, Crustal Crush for breaking enemies, and Mayhem serve as Lune's primary damage skills. Stormcaller is particularly effective with Wildfire, summoning additional lightning strikes when consuming two Fire Stains, and also deals bonus damage when allies attack affected foes.
For parties with AP-hungry characters like an offense-focused Maelle or Sciel, consider adding Energizing Powerful and Shell to Lune's build, as these grant allies 2 AP upon receiving the buffs.
Lune Offense Build
This offensive build functions similarly to the support version but prioritizes direct damage, making it a strong sub-DPS option alongside characters like Maelle, Verso, or Sciel. Begin by applying Burn with Wildfire, then use Thermal Transfer to generate AP. Crustal Crush is effective for building Break, and Mayhem offers significant damage at a high AP cost. Revitalization is included for party health sustain.
Maintaining a rotation of alternate element skills is crucial, as Kralim's perk increases skill damage by 20% up to five times, but resets if the same element is used twice consecutively. Pictos like Energizing Start IV, Dead Energy I and II, First Strike, Solidifying, and Auto Shell provide early AP advantages and defensive buffs. Painted Power and Cheater are vital for maximizing damage output and turn efficiency.
Maelle Builds
Maelle is a formidable character whose effectiveness hinges on mastering her Stance switching and managing her costly skills. She excels as a debuffer, capable of inflicting Burn and reducing enemy defense. While she has some support capabilities, her primary strength lies in offensive output, making it advisable to have other characters handle buffs for her.
Maelle DPS Build
This build focuses on high damage potential, requiring some setup. Burning Canvas and Swift Stride activate Virtuose Stance, with Fleuret Fury dealing extensive damage and sustaining the stance. Sword Ballet is reserved for maximum damage, and Breaking Rules is included to counter shielded enemies common in the game's later stages.
The Medalum weapon allows Maelle to start in Virtuose Stance and enhances Burn effects. Burning Canvas is favored over Rain of Fire for its higher damage against Burning targets at the same AP cost. The Cheater Picto is invaluable for executing combos without waiting for a new turn, such as applying Defenseless with Fencer's Flurry before using Sword Ballet.
Pictos such as Piercing Shot, Energizing Attack 1, Energizing Burn, Exposing Attack, Burn Affinity, Painted Power, and Cheater are recommended to maximize damage and utility.
Maelle Counter Build
This hybrid build leverages counterattack-focused Pictos to amplify the Revenge skill. The Jarum weapon (before completing Maelle's relationship quest) and Lithum (after completion) both trigger Virtuose Stance after a counterattack. Lithum uniquely maintains the Mark on an enemy after Maelle attacks, making it synergistic with Verso's marking abilities or Maelle's own Marking Shots Pictos.
Revenge's power scales with the number of times Maelle is hit, discouraging dodging or parrying. Egide allows Maelle to absorb damage for allies, compensating for the lack of evasion. Guard Up can provide Shell, though this may be redundant with a supportive Lune or Sciel. Stendhal offers alternative damage options if Guard Up is not needed.
The Cheater Picto is useful for entering Virtuose Stance, applying Guard Up without sacrificing an attack turn, or managing debuff durations if Stendhal is used.
Pictos such as Powerful Mark, Clea's Life, Augmented Counter I, II, and III, Painted Power, and Cheater are essential for this build.
Sciel Builds
Sciel offers strong sub-DPS capabilities and significant support potential, pairing well with heavy-hitting allies like Maelle and Lune who inflict Burn.
Sciel DPS Build
The objective of this offensive Sciel build is to accumulate Foretell stacks on enemies by casting Sun skills, then consuming them with a Moon skill for bonus damage. Sciel enters Twilight after activating both Sun and Moon charges, dealing increased damage. The Martenon weapon amplifies damage based on active charges, doubling them at max level for consistent high damage output.
Searing Bond and Marking Card are the primary Sun skills, with Marking Card being particularly useful for AP stacking via Sciel's Pictos. Searing Bond synergizes well with Lune and Maelle if they apply Burn.
This build requires substantial AP, making skills like Sealed Fate and Twilight Dance crucial. A combination of Pictos like Energizing Turn, First Strike, Breaking Burn, Energizing Start I and II, Energy Master, Energizing Parry, Painted Power, and Cheater can ensure consistent skill usage. Additional Pictos such as Marking Shots, Burning Shots, Beneficial Contamination, and Energizing Shots can further boost AP and apply status effects.
Sciel Support Build
This support build capitalizes on Sciel's potent support skills, Fortune's Fury and Intervention. Fortune's Fury doubles the power of a target ally's next attack, creating devastating combos when paired with skills like Maelle's Stendhal or an empowered Revenge, alongside buffs and debuffs.
All Set provides Shell, Rush, and Powerful to the party. With Cheater, Sciel can apply these buffs and still have an additional turn for other actions. Auto-Death, while extreme, initiates battles with significant buffs and damage to allies. Free Aim Pictos can be used for further debuffing, or basic attack Pictos for general utility. The core of this build is explosive death coupled with powerful ally buffs, allowing for flexibility in customization.
Pictos such as Energizing Turn, Auto-Death, Second Chance, First Strike, Clea's Death, Energizing Death, Death Bomb, Greater Powerful, Greater Shell, Greater Rush, Breaker, Breaking Death, Painted Power, and Cheater are recommended.
Verso Builds
Verso is a versatile character who can function as a primary DPS, sub-DPS, or support unit, excelling in builds that focus on debuffing enemies and setting them up for increased damage. Free Aim shots are central to most Verso builds, and the Cheater Picto is nearly essential, especially on Expert difficulty.
Verso DPS Build
Dualiso is recommended for Act 2 due to its base attack bonus, allowing for debuffing and setup turns. However, it should be replaced by Corpeso at the start of Act 3. Corpeso significantly boosts Burn damage and enables Burn application with a single base attack, while also generating AP.
Pictos for this build focus on enhancing Burn damage and application, while also increasing Verso's AP. Recommended Pictos include Energizing Attack 1, Combo Attack 3, Exposing Attack, Burning Shots, Burn Affinity, Double Burn, Energizing Burn, Painted Power, and Cheater. Additional AP support can be gained from Energizing Burn and Energizing Shots.
Assault Zero serves as a standard attack, while Defiant Strike and Berserk Slash form a damage-increasing combo based on missing health. Follow Up can deal high damage after Free Aim shots, and Phantom Stars is a powerful capstone skill for Breaking and dealing damage.
Verso Support Build
The Sireso weapon is ideal for this build. Its first perk diverts half of Verso's Perfection damage bonus to the entire party, effectively providing a significant party-wide buff that can be quickly stacked via Paradigm Shift and other low-cost skills, as well as Free Aim shots. Powerful also applies the status effect to the party, which can be augmented with Rush via specific Pictos.
Perfect Recover can be useful for the Perfection buff, even if evasion is not an issue. Most damage in this build comes from Free Aim and base attacks, where Verso debuffs enemies, marks them, and gains AP and Perfection, often within a single turn, or more with Cheater.
Pictos such as Rush on Powerful, Longer Powerful, Double Mark, Augmented Aim, Marking Shots, Energizing Shots, Exposing Attack, Combo Attack 3, Stay Marked, Painted Power, and Cheater are recommended.
Monoco Builds
Monoco is a complex character to build, offering numerous skill combinations. The following builds focus on reliable high damage output and a dedicated Break build.
Monoco Offense Build
This build relies heavily on the Mask Wheel to amplify Monoco's damage. Sidaro's unique effect continuously increases damage dealt by empowered skills—those matching the current mask—and resets if a non-empowered skill is used. The skill selection covers each mask, with Almighty Mask making any skill empowered.
Maintaining sufficient AP is crucial, which can be managed with a supportive Lune or Sciel build, or by utilizing a substantial number of Energizing Pictos. Recommended Pictos include Augmented First Strike, Sniper, Stay Marked, Powerful Shots, Rush on Powerful, Shell on Rush, Rewarding Mark, Burning Mark, Burn Affinity, Burning Shots, Energizing Shots, Energizing Parry, Energy Master, Energizing Rush, Energizing Powerful, Painted Power, and Cheater.
Creation Void and Lampmaster Light are Monoco's heavy-hitting skills. Lampmaster Light's power increases with each use, independent of consecutive casting. Chapelier Slash is useful for Marking enemies and gaining associated buffs, as is Gault Fury, which sets up Benisseur Mortar to automatically switch the Mask Wheel to Almighty if the enemy is Marked.
Monoco Break Build
This build provides Monoco with multiple opportunities to Break enemies, featuring a cycle to return to Almighty Mask every three turns for powerful skills like Duallist Storm or Lampmaster Light. Hexga Crush and Portier Crash can soften enemies. A consistent Almighty cycle involves starting with Lampmaster or Duallist, using Demineur Thunder to advance the Mask Wheel five spaces, followed by Clair Enfeeble to weaken foes and return to Almighty for the next powerful skill.
This build pairs well with counterattack-focused Maelle or characters who frequently apply Burn. Alternatively, Monoco can apply Burn and other debuffs with Free Aim shots using Cheater and Burning Shots, then benefit from Breaking Burn before proceeding with the normal skill rotation. Cheater is not essential but enhances gameplay, particularly on Expert mode.
Pictos such as Breaker, Quick Break, Critical Break, Energizing Parry, Breaking Burn, Breaking Counter, Painted Power, and Cheater are recommended.
