Chromite, a key component for crafting advanced items in Palworld, is found primarily underground on Feybreak Island, located south of Mount Obsidian. Unlike many other resources, mining Chromite requires specific tools or Pal assistance.

To begin gathering Chromite, players can either craft a Metal Detector or recruit a Pal named Smokie, which possesses a partner skill to aid in digging. While using a Smokie is an accessible early-game option, crafting a Metal Detector is recommended for faster and more efficient harvesting, despite its higher material cost.

Using the Metal Detector

The blueprint for the Metal Detector becomes available on the tech tree at level 58. Crafting it requires 30 Plasteel, 100 Paldium Fragments, 15 Computers, and 20 Nightstar Sand. Once equipped, the Metal Detector automatically scans the surrounding soil as the player explores. When Chromite is detected, a rocky node marked by a blue beacon will emerge from the ground. This node can then be harvested with a pickaxe, similar to other ore deposits.

Smokie's Partner Skill

Wild Smokies can be found roaming Feybreak Island. After catching one, players must craft and equip the Smokie's Harness, which is unlocked from the Level 58 tech tree. For enhanced efficiency, the Pal Essence Condenser can be used to improve the Smokie's partner skill. When using Smokie's assistance, players need to repeatedly activate its digging ability by pressing the 'E' key while moving to scan for Chromite nodes.

Passive Chromite Farming

A more involved, yet passive, method for accumulating Chromite involves breeding Smokies. This strategy begins by catching one male and one female Smokie and placing them in the Breeding Farm. They require Cake or Vegetable Cakes to produce Dark Eggs. Once hatched, these young Smokies can be processed using the Pal Disassembly Conveyor. When disassembled, the remains of each Smokie are expected to yield Chromite, offering a consistent, albeit ethically questionable, source of the ore over time.
