Valheim's recent 1.0 update introduces the Gammeltroll, a formidable rock monster standing approximately 30 feet tall, found in the game's latest biome, the Deep North. This creature attacks players from a distance by hurling tree trunks and can crush them if they get too close. Upon defeat, the Gammeltroll does not collapse but instead transforms into a statue known as a "Petrified Gammeltroll."
Extracting Resources from the Petrified Gammeltroll
Directly mining the Petrified Gammeltroll with even the most advanced pickaxe proves ineffective. To obtain the critical new resource hidden within, players must employ a unique strategy that utilizes items from both the Ashlands and the Deep North.
Crafting Ember Charges
First, players need to defeat the Ashlands boss, Fader. After obtaining the Fader Relic, construct the Eternal Pyre at your base by using the relic and 10 stones. This monument will periodically generate embers. Collect these embers as they become available.
Next, players must hunt seals in the Deep North. Be advised, it is adult seals with whiskers that are required, not their young. Collect seal pelts from these creatures. Combine one ember with two seal pelts at a workbench to craft ten Ember Charges.
Deploying Ember Charges
Once Ember Charges are crafted, equip them and approach the Petrified Gammeltroll. Throw the charges at its ankles from close range, then retreat to avoid the blast radius. Typically, two Ember Charges, one for each ankle, are sufficient to destroy the statue. While Ember Charges can damage a living Gammeltroll, their effectiveness is not significant enough to warrant their use in active combat.
After the troll collapses into rubble, players can collect the new resource, Petrified Tissue. This material is exceptionally heavy, limiting the amount that can be carried. Furthermore, Petrified Tissue cannot be transported through wooden portals, only stone ones. Back at the player's base, the Petrified Tissue can be processed in a blast furnace to yield further materials.
