This guide provides a comprehensive walkthrough for two critical areas in Mortal Shell 2: Mushroom Village and the Sunken Village, detailing the steps needed to overcome their challenges and defeat their respective bosses.
Mushroom Village Exploration
Mushroom Village serves as the initial major enemy area and a necessary pathway to the game's first major boss. It is a complex region filled with numerous pickups and secrets, where winding paths and bridges can easily disorient players. This walkthrough covers clearing every Beacon, dungeon, and NPC questline within the village.
The journey begins with opening the Offerings Chest, which requires lighting three candles in the area. After this, players must reach and cleanse the Mushroom Village Beacon. The subsequent step involves cleansing the Passenger's Shrine, a dungeon accessed by resting at the Beacon. This shrine contains several enemies and culminates in obtaining the Emberseed Stone Tarstone.
Players will then encounter the Grisha Hunter camp. It is recommended to break the lock on the Grisha Pup's cage rather than purchasing the key, which initiates a fight with the hostile Grisha Hunters. After defeating them, interacting with the Grisha Pup yields a Sheephead Totem. Returning to the camp after resetting the area reveals the Grisha Matron, leading to a challenging boss fight. Finally, the camp will yield Weltcaps upon another reset.
To access a secret area, players must switch the world to Nighttime by returning to Marrow Keep and speaking with Thestus, then teleporting back to the Mushroom Village Beacon.
Nighttime Secrets and the Shrine of Sorrows
During Nighttime, players can obtain the Chapel Key by defeating Babka enemies near a pyre and interacting with a rope dangling from a statue. Beyond the pyre lies the Shrine of Sorrows, a unique first-person puzzle dungeon. This shrine requires players to find and light three candles, then solve a series of environmental puzzles within a house to obtain the Tempered Iron Key and various Sonata items. Ultimately, players must find and drink a special soup, leading to a final puzzle that rewards a Tooth of Nochte upon completion.
After completing the Shrine of Sorrows, players should return to Marrow Keep to switch the world back to Daytime.
The Shrine of Trials and NPC Quests
With the Chapel Key obtained, players can enter the Shrine of Trials via the Grisha Hunter Camp. This dungeon features Wraith and Brigand enemies, culminating in the acquisition of the new Axe and Dagger weapon type. Following this, players should locate Hilga and Grom, two NPCs who initiate their own questline.
The Corrupted Statue Trial presents a combat challenge guarded by Lithopods and Frog Cultists, rewarding players with the Marksman's Stone Tarstone. The village's remaining areas introduce new enemies like the Necrite and Neophyte Sester, requiring players to navigate platforms and defeat foes to find valuable items.
The Mushroom Village Gate Beacon marks the entrance to the Hall of Illusions. This final dungeon within Mushroom Village features trick archways hiding passages and culminates in a boss fight against Vrannic, the Grand Illusionist. Defeating Vrannic rewards the Volatile Fragment Tarstone and opens the gateway to the next major area.
Unlocking Mether's Breath
Returning to Marrow Keep and using the Gloom Siphon after acquiring new Ova grants players Mether's Breath. This item unlocks fast travel between Beacons from within the menu and allows players to cleanse corrupted areas that block pathways.
Sunken Village and Magdalena's Glade
The Sunken Village is the game's first legacy dungeon, accessible through the gateway at the Mushroom Village Gate Beacon. Before entering, it's advised to give Tiel Poison Immunity by upgrading his Shell Abilities in Marrow Keep.
Inside the Sunken Village, players will face Wortbinder Witches, Shield Brigands, and Frog Cultists. The area features an Offerings Chest requiring three candles to be lit, rewarding the Siegebreaker's Stone Tarstone. The Seeping Mire Beacon leads to the Rootwater Hollow, a miniboss arena featuring a Circle Of The Grasping Root, which is a collection of regular enemies.
Further exploration yields the Shrike Stone Tarstone and leads to the Sunken Village Beacon, which grants access to the Wortbriar Encampment. Cleansing this encampment opens a shortcut and rewards the Corroded Stone Tarstone. Players will then obtain the Revered Gland, which allows for the upgrade of Mether's Pulse healing charges.
Boss Encounters and Post-Boss Progression
The Sunken Village culminates in two boss fights. The first is the Wandering Shepherd, who teleports and possesses sheep to distract the player. The second, and more significant, boss is Magdalena, The Lady Of The Woods, fought in Magdalena's Glade. This fight tests patience, as Magdalena utilizes unblockable charges and fiery area-of-effect attacks. Upon defeating Magdalena, players receive Magdalena's Memento and unlock Magdalena's Glade Beacon, which contains numerous Ova.
Returning to Marrow Keep after collecting the Ova yields a substantial amount of Gloom and Ventrium. Players can then give Franz the Etching Needles to upgrade Tarstones at the Tarforge and visit Merrick's Shop to purchase essential upgrade materials like Revered Glands and Synaptic Vessels.
Finally, visiting Sester Genessa while wearing Tiel's Shell provides unique dialogue and hints at a historical connection between the two characters. With these areas cleared, players are prepared for the next stage of their journey in Mortal Shell 2.
