Mortal Shell 2 introduces a distinct defensive option alongside traditional parrying, guarding, and dodging: the Harden ability. This mechanic allows players to temporarily transform their Harbinger's skin into a hardened, rock-like state, capable of absorbing enemy attacks for a significant duration.
Players gain the ability to Harden after completing the Prologue and defeating the Tar Golem boss. Upon defeating the boss, players can loot Vatra's Seal from its corpse, which then grants the Harden ability when equipped.
To activate Harden, players must press and hold the LB button. While Hardened, the Harbinger becomes impervious to most enemy assaults. An enemy strike against a Hardened Harbinger will stagger the attacker, and the ability is governed by a visible Harden bar at the bottom of the screen, which must recharge after each use.
A crucial advanced technique is the Perfect Harden. This occurs when the Harden button is pressed just before an enemy attack connects. A successful Perfect Harden inflicts Break damage on the enemy's Break bar, a yellow meter located beneath their health. Furthermore, executing a Perfect Harden instantly replenishes the Harden bar, allowing for rapid, successive uses. This makes Perfect Harden exceptionally effective for overwhelming enemies with consistent Break damage, even when facing multiple opponents simultaneously, a feat difficult to achieve with other Seals.
It is important to note that Harden protects against all attacks except those signaled by a red flash, which indicate unblockable strikes and grabs.
While Harden can theoretically be maintained for extended periods, its usability is limited by the recharge time of the Harden bar. This prevents the ability from being overpowered, as players will be vulnerable if an enemy attacks before the bar has refilled. Consequently, Harden is particularly useful when outnumbered or when engaging multiple enemies.
This defensive capability suits an aggressive playstyle that involves managing the Harden bar effectively. It also serves as a valuable tool for players who struggle with precise parrying or guarding, or as a means of protection when the Harbinger is outside its Shell.
Some players find Harden particularly effective with faster Shells, like Tiel, to support hit-and-run tactics, while tankier Shells might benefit more from focusing on parrying. Careful observation of the Harden bar is essential to maximize its defensive potential.
