Deciding whether to spare Xanthe in The Blood of Dawnwalker presents a difficult choice for players. As an ancient vampire responsible for the deaths of innocent women, her nature is undeniably evil. However, her motivations for using Brencis as a tool may lead players to consider the potential advantages of an alliance. This guide contains spoilers for Xanthe's quest, "The Cycle of Love."
The Impact of Sparing Xanthe
Should you choose to spare Xanthe in her mansion after defeating her during "The Cycle of Love" quest, the final assault on Griefberg Castle will unfold differently. Notably, players will not have to contend with Blood Guard enemies. Xanthe will appear in the castle and offer advice, and the player will be spared the nightmare sequence that occurs if Xanthe is killed.
However, these benefits come at a cost. If Xanthe is killed, players will not face her in the castle either. The primary advantages of an alliance are avoiding the Blood Guard encounters and skipping the brief nightmare puzzle involving specters that Xanthe conjures posthumously. Furthermore, killing Xanthe and consuming her blood unlocks the Blood Surge ability.
Xanthe's True Motives
If Xanthe is spared, it becomes clear that she intends to continue killing women to sustain her daughter, Chariklea. Chariklea, who appears to be a mortal kept alive through dark magic and extensive surgery due to Xanthe's inability to let go, is presented as a tragic figure. The player is then faced with a decision regarding Chariklea's fate.
Players can choose to leave Chariklea to her fate, implying she will eventually succumb to starvation or the waning of the dark magic sustaining her. Alternatively, players can choose to end her suffering, which is presented as the more humane option.
