Adaptations in Subnautica 2 are essential for player progression, enabling access to new areas and survival mechanics like tolerating extreme temperatures and understanding alien languages. These adaptations are unlocked by interacting with Angel Comb plants, which modify the player character's DNA. There are currently four Adaptations available, each increasing in difficulty to acquire.
Pressure Tolerance Adaptation
The Pressure Tolerance Adaptation is the most straightforward to obtain, found within the game's prologue. Players will be prompted to interact with an Angel Comb plant in a lab environment, immediately granting this vital ability. This Adaptation allows players to breathe in the planet's high-pressure atmosphere.
Digestion Adaptation
This Adaptation is also accessible relatively early in the game and is necessary for consuming food. The Angel Comb for the Digestion Adaptation is located approximately 160 meters northeast of the player's Lifepod. It can be found while searching for Anita's black box signal or by navigating directly to its location.
Heat Tolerance Adaptation
Acquiring the Heat Tolerance Adaptation is more complex and requires the use of a Sonic Resonator. This Adaptation is crucial for exploring high-temperature biomes and Alien Ruins. The associated Angel Comb is located about 200 meters west-northwest of the Lifepod at a depth of 50 meters. To craft the Sonic Resonator, players must first scan two fragments found within the Old Habitat, located around 400 meters north-northwest of the Lifepod. The crafting recipe for the Sonic Resonator includes 1x Basic Battery, 2x Lead, 2x Titanium Ingots, and 1x Wiring Kit. Once the Sonic Resonator is crafted, players must locate an infected Angel Comb approximately 180 to 200 meters west-southwest of the Lifepod. This Angel Comb is situated within a large stone structure with an entrance at the bottom. It is afflicted with Bloom Cankers that must be destroyed by blasting them off. Players should follow the tendrils to locate and eliminate all visible Bloom Cankers before returning to the healed Angel Comb to unlock the Adaptation.
Axum Vision Adaptation
The Axum Vision Adaptation is the most advanced and requires significant game progression, including an upgraded Tadpole (potentially with the Scout Chassis to bypass the Collector Leviathan) and a Feedback Resonator. The Feedback Resonator blueprint is unlocked by scanning two fragments: one found in the Alien Ruins Research Lab, approximately 1100 meters east of the Lifepod, and the second at the Cicada Wreck (Therapy Room), about 220-230 meters east-southeast of the Karakorum Metal Farms. The Cicada Wreck fragment requires a Repair Tool to access. Crafting the Feedback Resonator requires 1x Sonic Resonator, 1x Enamelled Glass, 1x Conduit Crystal, and 2x Strontium. Strontium can be processed from Celestine found near the Alien Ruins. To unlock the final Adaptation, players must travel approximately 1800 meters east of the Lifepod, requiring a Depth Module for the Tadpole. Here, players will find the Angel Comb, which also has Bloom Cankers that must be destroyed using the Feedback Resonator for ranged targeting. Players must locate and destroy two Bloom Cankers in three separate areas, avoiding Bloom Parasites that attack if hit. After destroying all Cankers, returning to the main Angel Comb plant and interacting with it will unlock the Axum Vision Adaptation, allowing interaction with Axum technology and language.
With all four Adaptations unlocked, players can explore previously inaccessible areas, such as the Axum Door in the Observatory and the Hot Biome. While these are the Adaptations currently available in early access, more are expected to be added in future updates.
