The Blood of Dawnwalker's "A Monk and a Saint" quest presents a significant challenge, requiring players to locate St. Mihai's crypt and uncover his symbol with minimal guidance. The path to completion varies depending on whether the quest is undertaken during the day or night, with distinct objectives and approaches for each.
This quest automatically begins after finishing "Between the Words," which itself follows "Echoes of Silenced Bells." Alternatively, "A Monk and a Saint" can be initiated by completing the "Night Terrors" quest, unlocked by approaching the well in Svartrau Cathedral's courtyard. If "Between the Words" has not been completed, obtaining "Night Terrors" serves as a shortcut, allowing players to bypass the "Find Albertus" objective.
Finding Albertus
If you have completed "Between the Words," Albertus can be found in the Middens, west of Svartrau City. His approximate location will be marked on the map, but his house, a small corner building covered in scribbles, must be found using focus mode. To engage Albertus in conversation, players must select specific dialogue options. He will suggest that St. Mihai's sword might be hidden within Svartrau Cathedral.
Completing the Quest at Night
Players undertaking "A Monk and a Saint" at night should use Shadowstep to ascend the southwest tower of Svartrau Cathedral. Inside, the investigation screen will allow examination of church plans, a fresco, and Xanthe's ritual. The key fresco, depicting St. Mihai, is the furthest left and requires jumping across scaffolding to examine. After this, players should leave the cathedral and proceed to the courtyard to start the "Night Terrors" quest by interacting with the well.
Within the well, examining a corpse takes one turn. After defeating monsters and moving a boulder, players must locate St. Mihai's symbol on one of the courtyard graves. Facing the cathedral, St. Mihai's grave is the second from the right. Before entering the crypt, players must prepare for a difficult battle against Mihai himself. Interacting with a cracked wall initiates the fight. Upon victory, "A Monk and a Saint" is completed, and players receive The Broken Sword of St. Mihai, with a new quest, "Forge it Anew," to fully restore it.
Completing the Quest During the Day
For players completing the quest during the day, after visiting Albertus, enter Svartrau Cathedral through the front doors. Here, players will meet Father Florin, though his quest is not required for progression. The main objectives involve speaking with the Deacon and a craftsman. The Deacon initiates a sub-quest called "A Dubious Gift," while the craftsman requests a glass shard from the caretaker's shed.
To find the caretaker, leave the cathedral via the northern exit, enter the courtyard, and proceed to the almshouse. Paying an asylum resident 100 denarii reveals information about an abandoned wing. Upstairs, in a smaller room, focus mode can reveal scratches on the floor, leading to a bookcase that can be pushed aside. After investigating clues and defeating a monster on the lowest floor, players can loot the caretaker's key. This key is used to retrieve glass shards from the caretaker's shed, which are then given to the craftsman to repair a window. The repaired window reveals St. Mihai's symbol, and the Deacon provides a library key. Inside the library, finding the correct bookcase and reading a book on a nearby stand provides information about St. Mihai's grave.
With St. Mihai's symbol revealed by the restored window, return to the courtyard and open the second grave from the right (facing the cathedral) to access St. Mihai's crypt.
It is also possible to wait for nightfall after speaking with the Deacon and use Shadowstep to enter the library, thus skipping the caretaker investigation. In this scenario, players should proceed to the nighttime section of the walkthrough starting from examining the fresco. Regardless of the chosen path, preparation for a difficult fight within the crypt is advised. Upon defeating St. Mihai, the "A Monk and a Saint" quest concludes, awarding The Broken Sword of St. Mihai. The quest "Forge it Anew" must then be completed to fully restore the weapon.
