The Home Sweet Home quest in The Blood of Dawnwalker offers a particularly unique and unsettling experience, described by some as one of the game's finest. This quest features a nightmarish, looping sequence that revisits the game's opening moments. This guide details how to navigate this disorienting journey, escape the repeating scenario, and unlock a hidden secret ending.
Starting the Home Sweet Home Quest
To initiate the Home Sweet Home quest, players must visit the Silts Tower, located in the southwestern part of the map, south of the Turtle Rock Shrine. The tower should be visited at nighttime. Upon entering, utilize Focus Mode to survey the surroundings and loot items, which will offer clues about the tower's inhabitants. Descend to the lower levels to clear out workers and continue your investigation and looting.
While a cave is present downstairs, it leads directly to a Ravenous Bear and should be avoided for the time being. Instead, make your way to the top of the tower, preparing to confront soldiers along the way. At the summit, you will encounter Svetlana, The Dark Prodigy. After defeating her, claim the Vault Key from her remains. It is advised to open the Vault in this room and loot the chest behind it before ascending further.
To proceed to the next floor, you must consume four time segments. After this, you can either observe the room or directly open the door to trigger the Home Sweet Home quest.
Navigating the Nightmare Loop
Upon opening the door at the top of Silts Tower, you will be transported back to the game's prologue, finding yourself in Coen's home with his family in Laslea. Engage in dialogue with Pieter using your preferred options. The immediate tasks involve splitting logs for firewood and speaking with your family. These actions mirror the game's opening sequence.
During breakfast, an intruder will arrive, forcing Coen to defend his family once more. The map will be temporarily inaccessible. Proceed towards the quest marker where Esme is under attack by Undead enemies. After escorting Esme to the church, follow the quest marker again to rescue your siblings from Vidmo enemies.
Your next objective is to rescue your father, Pieter, from the Keeper of Nightmares. This boss is capable of flight, making direct attacks challenging. Patience is key; wait for the prompt to Omniblock its attacks, then exploit the brief opening to inflict damage while dodging unblockable assaults. Consistent safe play will eventually lead to victory.
Following the boss fight, engage in dialogue and proceed through the church. A subsequent cutscene depicts Coen's family being slain by the Keeper of Nightmares within the church. As Coen exits through a church door, he finds himself back home, resetting the dream sequence into a Groundhog Day-like loop.
At this point, players have two distinct paths: unlocking a secret ending by repeatedly completing the dream sequence, or escaping the loop by investigating a well before confronting the Keeper of Nightmares.
Unlocking the Secret Ending
To achieve the secret ending of the Home Sweet Home quest, you must endure the sequence multiple times. After the first completion, skip chopping firewood and speak directly to Esme. The intruder will appear, and you must defeat the previously encountered enemies: the Undead, Vidmo, and the Keeper of Nightmares.
During your fifth playthrough of the sequence, choose the dialogue option 'We need to run' when speaking to Esme. This will trigger a unique, secret ending where Coen remains trapped with a nightmarish clone of his family indefinitely.
Escaping the Dream Sequence
To break free from the repeating nightmare, you must have completed the sequence at least once. After Coen's family is killed and you return home to begin the second iteration of the sequence, you can initiate your escape. Defeat the Undead and Vidmo enemies attacking Esme and your siblings.
Crucially, do not engage the Keeper of Nightmares. Instead, turn right from the area where you defended your siblings and use Focus Mode to locate a well.
Interact with the well to alter the sequence. Engage with the monster within the well, choosing any dialogue options. Coen will eventually be prompted to mention his long-lost brother, Alin.
Next, use Shadowstep to ascend the snow-covered walls. Proceed into the cave and use Shadowstep again to reach a mysterious portal.
You will arrive at Alin's funeral, where all attendees appear as red ghosts. When the priest pauses, interact with the designated person. The correct order of interaction is: Alin (the small coffin), Esme (standing beside the coffin), and Coen (on the pew to the left of the coffin).
Coen's ghost will flee; follow it to another portal. Continue following him to his hideout. Use Focus Mode to investigate the area and inspect the skates atop the wooden tree stump for a brief cutscene.
Afterward, the path to the west opens. Head there to reach the cliff edge and use Clawride to descend to the river. Here, you will be reunited with Alin.
Following this emotional reunion, Coen awakens in the basement of Silts Tower, concluding the Home Sweet Home quest. The exit is via the cave located to your right.
