Valheim's recent 1.0 update has introduced a new system for upgrading weapons and armor, utilizing Battle Idols and Protection Idols. These items, often found within chests scattered across the game's various biomes, do not have an immediate use but are crucial for enhancing player equipment.
Locating Idols
Idols are found as random loot in chests located in points of interest such as abandoned houses, burial chambers, ruined towers, and shipwrecks. The type of idol discovered is biome-dependent:
- Wooden Idol: Meadows
- Bronze Idol: Black Forest
- Iron Idol: Swamp
- Silver Idol: Mountains
- Black Metal Idol: Plains
- Black Marble Idol: Mistlands
- Flametal Idol: Ashlands
- Bloodgold Idol: Deep North
Battle Idols are used for weapon upgrades, while Protection Idols are intended for armor enhancements.
The Forge of Potential
The sole location where these idols can be utilized is the Forge of Potential. To find this special workbench, players must venture into the Mountains biome. Staying warm is essential in this cold environment, so it is advisable to come equipped with frost resistance mead or wolf fur armor.
Once players are in proximity to the Forge of Potential, an idol-shaped icon will appear on their map. While its exact placement can vary, it has been observed to be near the summoning altar for the boss Moder, often situated at the summit of a tall peak.
Using the Forge of Potential
At the Forge of Potential, players can attempt to refine their gear if they possess the appropriate idol and equipment in their inventory. Each idol corresponds to gear crafted from the same material; for instance, a Bronze Protection Idol can upgrade bronze armor. Similarly, an Iron Battle Idol is required for iron weapon upgrades.
Interacting with the forge allows players to select their desired gear for an upgrade attempt, provided an idol is present. Pressing the "Attempt Refinement" button initiates the process.
It is important to note that refinement attempts carry a risk of failure. If an upgrade fails, the targeted gear will be destroyed, though the crafting materials used to create it will be recovered. The forge cannot be used to recraft destroyed items; it is exclusively for upgrades. Additionally, a failed upgrade will inflict damage on the player, underscoring the importance of being at full health before attempting a refinement. An example of an upgraded bronze sword shows an increase in durability and slash damage, alongside a boost in block force, while other stats remained unchanged.
