Since its early access launch, Wardogs has seen massive player engagement, but some core mechanics remain confusing for newcomers. Among these is the Forward Operating Base, or FOB, an item explained by the in-game tutorial but whose full strategic importance is often underestimated. FOBs are not just for building; they are vital for maintaining control over zones and accumulating points.
A FOB can be deployed anywhere on the playable map, with the exceptions of your team's spawn base and areas immediately adjacent to an enemy FOB. Once a FOB is established, its zone of influence becomes a buildable area for your team, while simultaneously restricting enemy construction. To acquire a FOB, players must purchase one from an equipment vendor. It occupies a 2x3 inventory slot, necessitating an upgraded backpack, as the free version is insufficient.
Deployment is achieved by assigning the FOB to a hotkey and then holding the left-click button to place it. Each FOB comes with essential starting supplies, including small and medium hammers, and healing bandages. The primary utility of a FOB lies in its ability to create a protected zone where teams can erect walls, defenses, weapon emplacements, and other structures. These are commonly placed around towers, though they can be situated anywhere within the designated control zone. This fortification allows for both offensive and defensive strategies. For instance, a heavily fortified base with multiple mortars can effectively deter enemy infiltration and disrupt their operations, while strong defenses are critical for withstanding enemy artillery assaults and maintaining control of the zone.
Furthermore, parking an APC within a FOB's influence allows teammates to spawn directly into the controlled area, bypassing potentially long and hazardous journeys by road or air. This significantly enhances team mobility and strategic positioning.
The most advantageous locations for FOB placement are often at towers or churches. Towers are among the few indestructible structures in Wardogs, making them ideal for establishing a robust perimeter. Churches, also indestructible, are frequently situated on high ground or accessible via limited routes, offering tactical advantages. Fortifying these landmarks provides secure spawn points away from the main towers.
Defending and Supplying FOBs
Active defense of FOBs is paramount, as they require a constant influx of supplies, including building materials, ammunition, and fuel. This is especially critical when advanced structures like anti-armor drone launchers or the drill are being constructed. The drill, when activated, draws the 'hot zone' towards the FOB, accelerating XP and cash earnings for nearby players.
Players can contribute by transporting supply pallets via logistics trucks or aircraft. While each supply pallet costs $400, delivering one to a FOB yields $2500. Upon arrival, players must press 'F' to interact with the pallet and transfer its contents to the FOB. Manually carrying smaller supply crates into the FOB is also an option, requiring players to have a large backpack equipped.
Communication is key; players should monitor text or voice chat to identify specific supply needs. The optimal FOB strategy involves establishing a single, controlled point of entry.
Prioritizing FOB Construction
Construction should begin with perimeter defenses, such as high walls with barbed wire and a single main entrance for supply vehicles. Following this, offensive capabilities like SAMs, mortars, and sniper towers should be prioritized to defend the walls and engage opponents. The drill should be implemented next to maximize zone control benefits, with refueling stations considered a lower priority. After initial construction, it is crucial to build a green single door and high HESCO walls around the FOB to prevent hacking while more permanent defenses are established. Placing a FOB on a roof is ill-advised, as it presents an easy target for enemy mortars and poses challenges for supply deliveries.
It is essential to ensure that doors near the FOB are closed, as only the controlling team can open them. Effective FOB strategy, combined with strong team communication, can significantly increase the chances of winning matches in Wardogs.
