Asus has unveiled a special gold-themed edition of its ROG Ally handheld, dubbed the Xbox Ally X20, to commemorate ROG's 20th anniversary. This new model will be available as a standalone device or as part of an expensive bundle.
The Xbox Ally X20 retains the core specifications of the original Xbox Ally X, including the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor and 24GB of RAM. Key upgrades include a new OLED display, TMR joysticks, and a redesigned D-pad. The handheld sports a translucent chassis with gold accents, offering a distinct aesthetic.
A notable feature is the transforming D-pad, which allows users to rotate it to switch between a concave design and one with pronounced cardinal directions, similar to the functionality found on Xbox Elite controllers. This offers a degree of customization for preferred control inputs.
Asus plans to release the Xbox Ally X20 as a standalone handheld for $1,299. This positions it as a premium option, costing $300 more than the standard Xbox Ally X. The OLED display is highlighted as a significant justification for the price increase, especially considering the current market where comparable handhelds with similar specifications often approach $2,000.
Additionally, a bundle option will be available for $2,499, which includes the Xbox Ally X20 along with Asus ROG Xreal R1 glasses and other accessories. The company suggests that the standalone handheld is the more appealing option, as the bundle's price significantly inflates the cost for the included glasses, which can be purchased separately for $849.
