A budget-friendly USB hub sourced from AliExpress has been identified as a potential risk to PCs due to a critical design flaw related to its power input. Dr. Gough Lui of Dr Gough's Techzone conducted an internal examination of a $5, seven-port "USB 3.0" hub, uncovering several issues that compromise its safety and functionality.

Upon receiving the hub, which lacked prominent manufacturer branding, Dr. Lui observed minor external flaws before proceeding with a disassembly. The examination revealed that five of the seven ports were wired for USB 2.0 speeds, despite being advertised as USB 3.0. Only one port exhibited the correct configuration for USB 3.0 operation. Furthermore, the solder connections for the ports appeared minimal, suggesting a susceptibility to flexing and potential failure.

Power Input Concerns

The most significant concern identified relates to the hub's external power port. Dr. Lui discovered that the connection for an external power supply was integrated with the computer's power without a proper internal switch. This configuration allows the external power supply to backfeed into the computer. Such a design is known to potentially cause damage to the computer's ports or internal components, a vulnerability that has been recognized for over two decades. Additionally, the hub omitted capacitors intended for local bypassing, which could further exacerbate power stability issues.

While the hub does not include an external power adapter, the presence of a port for one, coupled with the identified backfeed issue, presents a risk if a user attempts to connect an aftermarket power supply. Dr. Lui noted that this could stress the computer's power supply unit and other sensitive components, potentially leading to component damage.

Dr. Gough concluded that the hub is "mildly dangerous (in terms of causing damage to other devices)" and deemed the risk of returning such an inexpensive item, especially considering potential cashback invalidation, as not worthwhile. The findings underscore the importance of caution when purchasing inexpensive PC accessories, as compromising on components like USB hubs could have detrimental effects on the longevity and stability of a gaming PC and its sensitive parts.
