A novel graphics card, unofficially dubbed the RTX 4080M, has emerged in China, combining laptop GPU silicon with a custom desktop PCIe board. This unique hardware configuration was reportedly a creative response to export restrictions on high-end Nvidia GPUs like the RTX 4090. While not an official Nvidia product and thus lacking driver support and warranty, early testing suggests an intriguing power efficiency profile.

Nvidia itself addressed the market gap with the export-only RTX 4090 D model in late 2023. However, a Bilibili user, known as 杰某 (Jie Mou), has benchmarked the RTX 4080M, highlighting its performance and, notably, its reduced power consumption. Testing was conducted on a system featuring an Intel Core Ultra 270K Plus CPU, an Asus Z890 motherboard, and 32GB of DDR5 RAM.

In 3DMark Time Spy, the RTX 4080M achieved a graphics score of 18,614. More significantly, this performance was reached using only 100W of total graphics power (TGP). This contrasts sharply with an official Nvidia RTX 4080 mobile GPU, which can draw up to 175W TGP. This substantial reduction in power draw suggests a more efficient design, leveraging mobile chip architectures.

Despite its unofficial status, the RTX 4080M has seen gaming tests against contemporary cards. Priced between 2,700 and 2,800 RMB (approximately $400 or £300) in China, it competes with the Nvidia RTX 4060 Ti and AMD RX 7070 GRE. In gaming benchmarks, the RTX 4080M, which also features 12GB of VRAM, traded blows with the RX 7070 GRE. While the AMD card held an advantage in most titles, the RTX 4080M demonstrated superior performance in specific scenarios, notably achieving around 10 more frames per second in Delta Force at 4K Ultra settings and significantly outperforming the RX 7070 GRE by approximately 100 frames in PUBG at 2K Ultra.

However, the RTX 4080M's availability is strictly limited to China, and component shortages are contributing to its current price. For builders in China, especially those constructing compact ITX systems where thermal headroom is a concern, this card might present a compelling, albeit niche, option due to its form factor and lower power draw. For most users, however, newer, more powerful GPUs at a similar price point are generally recommended. For those in other regions, tracking the broader GPU market can be done through ongoing price analysis.
