Amid a CES dominated by AI announcements, Nvidia unveiled DLSS 4.5, the latest upgrade to its AI-powered upscaling technology. The update shadows drops today and is already available across hundreds of compatible PC games, promising performance gains on a broad slate of Nvidia hardware. DLSS, or Deep Learning Super Sampling, renders a game at a lower base resolution and upscales it with a trained neural network to approach native image quality while boosting frame rates. It remains one of the more broadly accepted AI-assisted gaming tools, designed to extend hardware capabilities rather than replace human effort.
DLSS 4.5 centers on two major upgrades. The first is the second generation of the Super Resolution Transformer, Nvidia’s upgraded upscaler. Nvidia says it delivers better image quality, more stability, reduced ghosting, and smoother edges. The transformer model is fully compatible with GeForce RTX 40 and 50 series GPUs, while RTX 30 and 20 series hardware can still benefit, though with smaller performance gains.
The second upgrade is an expanded Multi Frame Generation, which creates multiple new frames between rendered frames to smooth motion. The DLSS 4.5 iteration raises the cap from four to six generated frames, potentially lifting high-end targets toward 120fps or beyond. A new dynamic setting lets players specify a target FPS, with the GPU automatically adjusting the MFG rate to reach that goal. The 6X MFG feature is currently limited to RTX 50-series GPUs and is scheduled for release in the Spring.
Support for DLSS 4 remains strong: Nvidia says more than 250 games and apps now support DLSS 4, and it notes that about 80 percent of the top-20 new games of 2025 support the technology. The breadth of support underscores DLSS’s role as a practical enhancement for gamers while the broader CES AI discourse continues.
Taken together, DLSS 4.5 represents a meaningful step forward for Nvidia’s AI-upscaling roadmap. For players with compatible RTX hardware, the combination of the newer transformer and expanded frame generation offers tangible image quality improvements and higher frame-rate potential across a wide game catalog. In a PC graphics market grappling with pricing and availability, DLSS 4.5 provides a clear upgrade path for existing and prospective buyers—so long as the games in use support the feature.
