Gigabyte has launched a new series of B550 AM4 motherboards, a move signaling the ongoing severity of the global memory crisis. The B550 X Series is described by Gigabyte as "engineered to be the most powerful refresh of the AM4 platform motherboard." This initiative caters to builders seeking alternatives to the pricier AM5 platform, which relies on DDR5 memory.

The new motherboards are specifically recommended by Gigabyte for use with the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor. Launched in 2022, the 5800X3D is highlighted as a strong value proposition, boasting 8 cores, 16 threads, and 96MB of L3 cache. While the Ryzen 9 7950X3D and Ryzen 7 7800X3D represent newer architectures, the 5800X3D remains a capable chip for gaming and other tasks.

The B550 X Series motherboards come equipped with modern features such as Wi-Fi 7 connectivity and a robust 10-phase, 60A DrMOS VRM design. Gigabyte has also included its proprietary EZ PCIe latch and EZ-plug features for improved user convenience.

However, the resurgence of the AM4 platform is directly attributed to the escalating costs of DDR5 memory, which is essential for AM5 motherboards. The crisis has extended to DDR4 memory prices as well, making new PC builds more expensive across the board. Samsung, a major memory manufacturer, has warned of a "severe" memory supply shortage extending into next year, with uncertainty beyond 2029.

This situation forces PC builders to consider older platforms like AM4, or to wait for potential price drops or seek out older components. While an AM4 build can still offer a solid gaming experience, the introduction of new B550 boards underscores the significant impact of the current memory supply issues on the PC hardware market.
