Peripheral brand Jsaux is set to release E-Ink faceplates for Valve's Steam Machine, the company announced. Valve itself has stated it has no immediate plans to produce additional faceplate designs beyond the standard black panel and the premium options included with the 2 TB model. Jsaux will offer three variations: Color E-Ink, Mono E-Ink, and Color Dot Matrix.
Interested users can sign up via email to be notified about availability. While Jsaux has shared visual previews of the faceplates on social media, pricing and a specific release date have not yet been disclosed. This move by Jsaux comes after Valve indicated a more open approach to hardware customization for the Steam Machine, including plans to release the CAD files for the device's housing. Valve has also made files available for its internally developed 'inkterface', though this option may present a steeper learning curve for users.
This contrasts with previous third-party attempts at Steam Machine customization. For instance, Dbrand had to cancel a proposed case design after failing to secure permission from Valve. Mystery surrounds the release of the Steam Machine, with Valve not currently having any specific plans to create more of the E-Ink faceplates. The standard black faceplate is included with every Steam Machine. The 2 TB model also comes with faceplates made from red fabric and solid walnut. Valve plans to release the CAD files for the Steam machine housing so users can create their own custom designs. The necessary files for Valve's internally developed 'inkterface' have already been released. This may not be the most beginner-friendly project.
