Logitech's Mobi Fold aims to address the need for a portable mouse with a design that folds in half for maximum compactness. Resembling Microsoft's 2017 Surface Arc mouse in its folding mechanism, the Mobi Fold is constructed from silicone-wrapped plastic and targets users with limited space, particularly those on the go with gaming laptops. Its small size and folding capability make it easily mistaken for other devices, often prompting confusion until its function as a mouse is revealed.
Design and Portability
The Mobi Fold's standout feature is its ability to fold, reducing its dimensions to a mere 21 x 57 x 66 mm when closed. This allows it to slip into tight spaces, such as pockets or small bags. When unfolded, it measures 33 x 57 x 122 mm and weighs 79g. The design intends to provide a comfortable grip despite its compact nature. Logitech claims the hinge mechanism is durable, capable of withstanding 50,000 folding actions, which is projected to last around 15 years under average use. An on-device AI is reportedly used to prevent unintentional clicks during the folding process.
Internally, the Mobi Fold is equipped with a PAW3222 4,000 DPI optical sensor. It features four buttons: two main clicks and two programmable buttons integrated beneath the touch-sensitive scroll panel. Connectivity is handled via Bluetooth LE, with support for pairing to three devices simultaneously. A Logi Bolt receiver can also be used, though it is not included in the standard package. The mouse charges via USB-C.
Performance and Usability
For basic computing tasks and even some gaming, the Mobi Fold performs adequately. It glides over various surfaces, including trouser legs, and its pointer is described as reliable and accurate, offering a significant improvement over a laptop's trackpad. The inclusion of programmable buttons adds a layer of customization, with software like Logi Options+ allowing for functions such as double-tap auto-zoom.
The battery life is rated at 30 days on a full charge, with a quick charge feature providing up to 22 hours of use after just one minute of charging. However, the positioning of the USB-C port prevents usage while charging.
Drawbacks
Despite its innovative design, the Mobi Fold presents several usability challenges. The scroll wheel, implemented as a touch-sensitive panel, is prone to jerky scrolling and can be difficult to operate precisely. Its texture is similar to the surrounding buttons, making it easy to accidentally click the wrong area. For users accustomed to traditional mice, the slender body can feel awkward to grip, often requiring a less natural, crab-like hold rather than a comfortable palm grip. While it's possible to game with the Mobi Fold, it doesn't measure up to dedicated gaming mice.
Logitech positions the Mobi Fold as a travel accessory where extreme portability is prioritized over full-sized performance. While it's a clever piece of engineering, it falls short when compared to larger, more ergonomically designed mice, even those intended for travel. If bag space is not a critical constraint, a standard-sized mouse may offer a superior user experience, particularly for extended gaming sessions.
