Microsoft has extended the availability of Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10 by one year, pushing the final end-of-life date to October 2027. Initially, support was slated to conclude in October 2025, with the ESU program set to end in October 2026.

The ESU program, available for purchase, provides ongoing security updates to protect Windows 10 PCs from malware and ransomware. While feature updates for Windows 10 have ceased, the ESU ensures continued protection against online threats. Those already enrolled in the paid ESU program will see their subscription automatically extended to the new October 2027 end date without additional charge.

This extension offers a significant reprieve for the considerable number of users still operating on Windows 10. According to the Steam Hardware and Software Survey, approximately 24% of respondents utilize Windows 10 64-bit. This substantial user base benefits from the continued security support, as Windows 11's more stringent hardware requirements can pose an obstacle for older machines. Many users may find that Windows 11 is not compatible with their existing hardware without workarounds, or that upgrading necessitates purchasing entirely new equipment. The extended ESU timeline may alleviate pressure on users to undertake costly hardware upgrades, especially given recent global supply chain issues that have driven up the cost of computing hardware.
