MSI is expanding its high-quality QD-OLED gaming monitor lineup with the MPG 341CQR QD-OLED X36. This $899 display serves as a successor to the MSI MPG 341CQPX QD-OLED, bringing design upgrades, additional features, and an updated panel to the popular 34-inch, 3440x1440 ultra-wide curved format. With its cutting-edge technology and competitive pricing, it stands as a compelling option against established monitors like the Acer Predator X34 OLED and Samsung Odyssey G8, and can compete directly with the new Alienware AW3426DW.
Design and Features
The MPG 341CQR QD-OLED X36 features a 34-inch ultra-wide display with a 3440x1440 resolution and a 1800R curve designed to enhance immersion without being overly intrusive for standard use. MSI has refined the design from its predecessor, reducing the display's chin and incorporating a new sensor. The monitor retains a subtle RGB lighting segment on the rear, an intuitive five-way joystick for navigation, and power and shortcut buttons. The shortcut button's default function of launching MSI Intelligence Center, which attempts automatic installation via USB or DisplayPort, cannot be reassigned without the application being installed.
A notable improvement is the redesigned stand. Replacing the wider base of the previous model, the MPG 341CQR QD-OLED X36 now features a flat, hexagonal base that occupies less desk space. Despite its appearance, the stand's weight provides stability for the monitor, even when adjusting screen position. It offers 20 degrees of vertical tilt, 60 degrees of swivel, and 110mm of height adjustment. While it includes a minor pivot function, the monitor's width prevents a full 90-degree vertical orientation. For users preferring alternative setups, a 100x100mm VESA mount is supported. The stand also includes a cable management hole, though its size may limit the number of cables that can be routed through it.
Connectivity options on the MPG 341CQR QD-OLED X36 include two HDMI 2.1 ports and a DisplayPort 2.1a port, all capable of supporting the monitor's full resolution and refresh rate. The monitor also offers useful USB connectivity: two USB-A ports that can connect to a desktop via a USB-B backhaul, and a full-featured USB-C port. This USB-C port is particularly versatile, supporting the full display resolution and 360Hz refresh rate while also delivering up to 98 watts of power, making it ideal for charging laptops. A 3.5mm audio output jack is present, but the monitor does not include built-in speakers.
A sensor located below the display enables several intelligent features. The monitor can automatically dim or turn off the screen to conserve power and protect the panel when the user is away, resuming quickly upon their return. It can also adjust brightness and other settings based on ambient light conditions. While these automatic adjustments can sometimes be overly sensitive or slow, they can be configured to better suit individual usage patterns. One such feature, which dims the display when not directly in the user's line of sight, proved practical.
Testing and Performance
The MSI MPG 341CQR QD-OLED X36 delivers strong performance in testing. In its default Eco mode with power-saving settings, it achieves 205.9 nits of brightness, with 100% sRGB and 98% DCI-P3 color space coverage. Color accuracy is also notable, with a dE Max of 2.02. At 100% brightness, the display reaches 308 nits while maintaining its color gamut and a 6600K white point. Color accuracy sees a slight decrease, but the average dE1976 remains at 1.17 and a maximum of 2.21, making it suitable for tasks approaching professional color grading.
As an OLED display, the MPG 341CQR QD-OLED X36 boasts infinite contrast. Its pixel response times are exceptionally fast, with no discernible ghosting observed in Blur Busters' UFO test at its 360Hz refresh rate.
HDR performance is equally impressive. Using the True Black 500 HDR setting, peak white levels reached 366 nits for a full-screen window and 603 nits for a 10% window. With the Peak 1000 setting, small highlights achieved up to 1,551 nits, and larger areas up to 900 nits. These brilliant highlights combined with the deep black levels create a visually striking experience.
Gaming Experience
Gaming on the MSI MPG 341CQR QD-OLED X36 is a highly immersive experience. The 21:9 ultra-wide aspect ratio significantly enhances field of view, while the 3440x1440 resolution is more manageable for gaming hardware compared to 4K. The monitor's 360Hz refresh rate and variable refresh rate support ensure smooth, tear-free gameplay.
In practice, this translates to exceptionally fluid visuals. Games like 007 First Light felt more cinematic on the wide screen, and with DLSS and frame generation, the game ran near its 360Hz ceiling, providing buttery-smooth action. The monitor's contrast and color reproduction effectively render moody scenes and explosive firefights, while the 360Hz refresh rate and rapid pixel response times minimize motion blur, aiding in target acquisition in fast-paced titles like Trepang2.
The monitor's curved panel can still be susceptible to glare, but a new coating helps mitigate reflections more effectively than on previous MSI models. In typical office lighting conditions, reflections were minimal, even on dark screens.
An important upgrade is the RGB stripe sub-pixel layout, which resolves issues of color fringing and artifacts seen in fine details, particularly text, on earlier OLED monitors. While the previous MSI MPG 341CQPX QD-OLED had largely addressed this, the MPG 341CQR QD-OLED X36 eliminates this concern entirely.
The MSI MPG 341CQR QD-OLED X36 is available for $899, positioning it competitively within the premium ultra-wide gaming monitor market.
