Nvidia's DLSS 5 neural rendering technology is set to officially launch on September 3, debuting in NBA 2K27. This AI-driven technique processes geometry and color data from a game to generate an AI-rendered image on top of the existing frame, aiming to enhance photorealism without the traditional computational overhead.
Nvidia states that DLSS 5's AI model is constrained by the source scene's geometry and color information, preventing it from adding or misplacing elements within the game. The technology is exclusive to RTX 5000 series graphics cards at launch, with a recommendation for users to have an RTX 5070 or better for optimal experience.
Enabling DLSS 5 in NBA 2K27 is expected to reduce performance by approximately 50–60%. To counteract this potential frame rate drop, Nvidia suggests utilizing other components of the DLSS software suite, such as super resolution and frame generation, to maintain high frame rates. The quality of the final rendered image is also said to be dependent on the quality of the source input.
Despite a somewhat controversial lead-up to its release, including a leak of a DLL file in the NBA 2K27 beta last week, there is anticipation surrounding DLSS 5's potential to improve game visuals. The official integration by developers will allow for testing beyond Nvidia's marketing materials, offering a clearer view of its capabilities and limitations.
