Samsung's eighth-generation foldable, the Galaxy Z Flip 8, arrives with the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor found in its larger Fold 8 Ultra and the S26 Ultra. This significant upgrade from the previous model's MediaTek chip positions the Flip 8 as a more capable device, particularly for gaming, though its price has increased by $100 to a starting point of $1,199.
The device retains the distinctive foldable design that has become a hallmark of the Flip series. When closed, users can interact with a 4.1-inch external display, while opening the phone reveals a 6.9-inch main AMOLED panel. The form factor, which allows the phone to fold into a compact square, remains a key appeal, enhanced by a reduction in thickness to 6.1mm when unfolded, making it Samsung's thinnest Flip to date.
Both displays are AMOLED, with the outer screen featuring a 1048 x 948 resolution and the inner display offering 2520 x 1080. While the 391 ppi pixel density is noted as not exceptional by current smartphone standards, it is comparable to other devices in its segment. The crease on the inner display is present but less noticeable than on previous generations. Samsung has also addressed durability concerns by incorporating a titanium alloy film and plate beneath the display, designed to protect against damage from folding and unfolding.
Camera capabilities on the Flip 8 are largely similar to its predecessor, with the notable addition of 2x optical zoom, a step up from the Flip 7's reliance on digital zoom. Samsung also claims improved night-time performance across its foldable lineup this year, though specific details remain to be seen.
Performance and Thermal Considerations
Despite its compact design, the Z Flip 8 houses the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and 12GB of RAM, aiming to compete with other high-end smartphones. However, the thinner chassis inherent to the Flip design presents thermal challenges. While early tests show it performs comparably to the Fold 8 Ultra in less demanding titles like Arknights: Endfield, pushing the 1080p display to higher frame rates can lead to significant heat buildup.
Even during standard use, holding the phone horizontally during gaming can make the outer display uncomfortably warm. This partial heating of the device, while not reaching dangerous temperatures, impacts the user experience during extended gaming sessions. Battery life remains unchanged from the previous generation, with the Flip 8 equipped with a 4300mAh battery, a point of disappointment given the battery upgrade in the Fold 8 Ultra. Further testing is required to determine if Samsung has mitigated the performance throttling issues that have affected previous thin foldable models.
