Sony may be preparing to make its PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) 2.0 technology a standard feature on the PlayStation 5 Pro. Recent reports indicate that the latest beta system update for the console now enables PSSR 2.0 by default, a shift from the current retail version where users must manually activate the feature.

PSSR, first introduced as a selling point for the PS5 Pro, aims to enhance visual fidelity. While its initial rollout faced some criticism, Sony released an improved PSSR 2.0 version in March, which reportedly offers significantly better visual quality. The purpose of the system-level toggle, found within the video output settings, is to apply this enhanced upscaling to games that have not yet been specifically updated to support it.

The change in the beta update means that the "enhance PSSR image quality" option is now set to on, rather than requiring user intervention. While some players may express concern about system-level settings being enforced, the move suggests Sony's confidence in PSSR 2.0's performance. The system includes a tooltip warning users to disable the feature if they "experience unexpected behavior during gameplay," which typically refers to visual artifacts or glitches.

However, in the approximately four months since PSSR 2.0 became available, many users, including industry observers, have reported a lack of significant visual issues when the feature is enabled. This suggests that Sony has likely encountered few problems, otherwise, it might be hesitant to implement it as a default setting. Although this change is currently confined to the beta software, it is anticipated that the stable system software will eventually adopt PSSR 2.0 as the default for PS5 Pro users.

Users with access to the PS5 Pro beta can find the setting under Settings, then Screen and Video, and finally Video Output. While the option to disable "Enhance PSSR Image Quality" will remain available, it is generally recommended to keep it enabled unless specific gameplay problems arise. The exact timeline for when this update will transition from beta to the official retail build remains unconfirmed, but players can proactively enable PSSR 2.0 now to potentially benefit from improved visuals in compatible titles.
