Valve has initiated the sign-up process for its new virtual reality headset, the Steam Frame. Prospective buyers can now join a randomized list to be selected for purchase, a system Valve is employing again following its use for the Steam Machine. The sign-up window will remain open for 72 hours, concluding on September 17 at 1:00 PM ET.
Valve stated that this reservation system was implemented to enhance the purchasing experience and mitigate the impact of resellers. The company plans to notify the first group of selected customers starting September 18.
The Steam Frame is a wireless VR headset designed for playing both VR and non-VR titles available on Steam. It includes two controllers, one for each hand, and connects to a Steam Machine or other PC for game streaming. The package comes with Half-Life: Alyx. However, it does not include a power supply, though any USB-C charger supporting 45W or higher, including Steam Deck chargers, can be used. A dedicated power supply is available for purchase on Steam for $30.
The headset will be offered in two storage variants: 256GB and 1TB. The 256GB model is priced at $1,059 USD, while the 1TB model costs $1,299 USD. Regional pricing includes $1,529 CAD for the 256GB and $1,859 CAD for the 1TB version, alongside €1,049/€1,279, £889/£1,089, AUD $1,609/$1,969, and PLN 4,539/5,549 respectively.
Hardware specifications for the Steam Frame include a 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM. The 256GB version utilizes UFS storage, expandable via a microSD card slot. It features a rechargeable 21.6 Wh Li-ion battery, dual LCD displays with a resolution of 2160 x 2160 per eye, and a refresh rate adjustable from 72Hz to 144Hz (experimental). Tracking is handled by inside-out cameras, and connectivity options include Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. The headset also incorporates dual speaker drivers per ear and a dual microphone array, running on SteamOS 3.
An ergonomic accessories kit, priced at an additional $59 USD, is also available. This kit includes controller straps, a headset top strap, and an extended light blocker, intended to enhance comfort during extended play sessions.
Sign-ups for the Steam Frame are currently active and will close on September 17 at 1:00 PM ET.
