A reservation system has been discovered within Valve's backend systems, strongly suggesting that the company's new VR headset, the Steam Frame, may be nearing its release. The discovery was made by VR leaker Brad Lynch, who shared a glimpse of the system on X, noting that it is already active in Steam's backend for two unspecified SKUs.

While a specific release date for the Steam Frame remains unannounced, the presence of this reservation system implies that Valve is preparing for a launch and anticipates potential demand that could outstrip immediate supply. Lynch shared a screenshot depicting a lottery drawing notification email, which featured a placeholder date of December 31, 1969. This unlikely date was likely set to prevent the system from becoming accessible prematurely.

Lynch cautioned users against attempting to exploit this information, stating that "You can’t do anything with this information to beat the lottery system." This approach echoes Valve's previous hardware launches, as both the original Steam Machine and the Steam Controller utilized similar reservation and queue systems. While the queue for the Steam Machine has reportedly shortened since its release, Valve's backlog for the Steam Controller is estimated to extend to 2027.

The implementation of a reservation system for the Steam Frame is particularly significant as it indicates the hardware could be on the horizon. It also suggests that initial stock levels might be limited, necessitating such a measure to manage customer acquisition.
