The next generation of wireless networking, Wi-Fi 8, is beginning to surface, with manufacturers like ASUS showcasing new router models. While TP-Link announced the Archer 9 Ultra and Deco 8 Ultra, ASUS revealed its ROG Rapture GT-BN98 gaming router and the more mainstream ZenWiFi BN12 at Computex earlier this year. Actual pricing and release dates for these devices are yet to be fully confirmed, with availability expected later in the year.
Wi-Fi 8's primary objective is not a drastic speed increase over Wi-Fi 7, but rather an enhancement of stability and performance, especially under heavy network loads. This new standard aims to address real-world issues that can affect Wi-Fi 7 and its predecessors. Key improvements include nearly doubled speed at mid-to-long ranges, expanded IoT network coverage, lower latencies in congested Wi-Fi areas, and more robust handling of traffic from multiple connected devices. These advancements are particularly beneficial for modern homes with numerous demanding devices and for online gamers.
The ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BN98 is specifically targeted at gamers. In addition to the general benefits of Wi-Fi 8, it incorporates ROG's suite of gaming-specific enhancements. Its AI-powered Adaptive QoE technology analyzes network traffic in real-time to identify and prioritize applications, dynamically allocating bandwidth to ensure smooth gameplay and prevent other network activity from causing interruptions. The router also features a detailed interface for monitoring network conditions and connected devices.
Connectivity on the ROG Rapture GT-BN98 includes dual 10Gbps ports and multiple 2.5Gbps W/LAN ports, offering high-speed wired connections for PCs and other devices. The ZenWiFi BN12, designed for general consumers, will be available as a standalone router or as part of a mesh system. These systems will utilize MLO backhaul between nodes to maintain performance across the network. Each ZenWiFi BN12 node is equipped with dual-10Gbps and triple-2.5Gbps ports.
Both ASUS Wi-Fi 8 router models offer comprehensive network monitoring tools, VPN integration, multi-SSID support, and server functionalities. They also include ASUS's AiProtection security suite, which provides parental controls and network security features at no ongoing subscription cost.
While these Wi-Fi 8 routers are nearing release, users currently on Wi-Fi 7 may not need to rush to upgrade. Client devices such as smartphones, laptops, or adapters supporting Wi-Fi 8 are expected to become widely available after the router releases, potentially by weeks or months. However, for those in the market for a new router, investing in a Wi-Fi 8 model offers the advantages of Wi-Fi 7 plus additional enhancements, making it a more future-proof choice.
