The iconic Wii Nunchuk, known for its ergonomic design, has found a new purpose beyond gaming. John Dingley, a creator on YouTube channel John's Projects, has successfully repurposed the controller as a custom macro-pad for video editing software, specifically DaVinci Resolve.
This innovative setup utilizes the Anavi Handle, an open-source USB adapter that connects the Nunchuk to a PC. The adapter employs a Seeed Studio Xiao RP2040 microcontroller, contributing to a surprisingly low overall cost for the project. Dingley's motivation stemmed from a desire for a more comfortable input method for editing tasks, finding that traditional keyboards and even some dedicated macro-pads required awkward wrist positioning during extended use.
"Super-comfortable" and "one of the most ergonomic things ever made," are Dingley's descriptors for the Nunchuk's design, which was originally conceived for a family-friendly console. The ability to hold it upright is a key factor in its suitability for prolonged editing sessions, potentially alleviating wrist strain.
The current configuration assigns specific functions to the Nunchuk's buttons. The lower pushbutton acts as a clip splitter, while the joystick is mapped to perform a ripple delete when moved left and an undo action when moved right. The upper pushbutton remains unassigned, offering flexibility for future customization.
While the Anavi Handle and Wii Nunchuk combination don't function as a macro-pad straight out of the box, Dingley has detailed the necessary coding process in his video. This DIY approach also arose from Dingley's realization that he did not utilize all the buttons on a standard macro-pad. By using the Nunchuk for specific editing commands, he can now store his conventional macro-pad away, relying on his keyboard for text input.
This application is admittedly niche, as professional editing tools like the DaVinci Speed Editor offer a broader range of dedicated buttons. However, for video editors who primarily need quick access to a limited set of functions—such as cutting clips, undoing actions, and switching between tools—this Nunchuk-based macro-pad presents a smart, cost-effective, and visually distinctive solution.
