Elden Ring's launch on the Nintendo Switch 2, originally planned for last year, has been delayed to August 28, 2026. Publisher Bandai Namco has seemingly used this extended development time to address the performance issues that plagued early tests, resulting in a version that Senior Video Producer Jake Dekker describes as a "surprisingly good compromise."

Dekker's extensive testing in both docked and handheld modes reveals that Elden Ring on Switch 2 maintains a more consistent frame rate than initially shown. While frame rate drops still occur, they do not reach the severe lows observed in earlier previews, making the game a more stable experience. However, it does not achieve the 60 frames per second seen on PC, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5. Dekker noted that while the performance is not perfect and the frame rate dips are noticeable, particularly for those accustomed to smoother performance on other platforms, the game remains playable and not distracting.

Bandai Namco has not officially disclosed the target resolution and frame rate for the Switch 2 version, but it appears to hover around a consistent 30fps in docked mode. Although a higher frame rate could benefit players during challenging boss encounters where precise timing is crucial, the current cinematic frame rate does not render the game unplayable. For players willing to accept a lower frame rate, the "Tarnished Edition" for Switch 2 includes the base game and its acclaimed "Shadow of the Erdtree" expansion. This package also features new cosmetic items, including skins for the player's steed Torrent, unique armor sets, and two new classes: the Heavy Knight and the Idus Knight. The $80 price point for this comprehensive content offering may be particularly appealing to newcomers, though players who have already experienced Elden Ring on other platforms might find the value proposition less compelling, especially given the technical advantages available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.

For those for whom a 30fps frame rate is a significant drawback, FromSoftware's upcoming title, The Duskbloods, is slated to launch for the Switch 2 and promises a 60fps Souls-like experience, according to early gameplay footage.
