The long-awaited return of Professor Layton and the New World of Steam has a confirmed release date: December 10, 2026. The puzzle-adventure game was initially revealed in February 2023 and marks the return of the titular Professor Herschel Layton to the series's lead role, following his daughter Katrielle in 2017's Layton Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaire's Conspiracy.
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is set to feature the "biggest collection of puzzles in series history," blending mystery narratives with a wide array of puzzle minigames. The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
This release follows a period of relative quiet for the franchise, with the last new entry appearing on iOS and Android in 2017. A port of that game was the closest the series came to a new installment during the original Nintendo Switch's lifespan. The upcoming title's release date was announced during a recent Nintendo Direct presentation, which also showcased other upcoming games such as a new 2D Metroid and a 3D Kirby title.
